It was actually Tarantino’s second film after his already groundbreaking debut Reservoir Dogs, both of which he wrote and directed, though it was Pulp Fiction that ultimately established its creator as an influential filmmaker and made him legendary around the world. Tarantino’s affection for different film genres can be noticed throughout all of his films. He usually pays tribute to them by using his distinct knowledge of their conventions and blending them into his own films. It is not that he just replicates them; in fact, he adds refreshing stylistic elements and recreates them into completely new shapes. His films also are full of references to a variety of different movies as well as diverse pop cultural minutiae. The assembly of numerous generic influences in one single movie, which Tarantino consciously practices, can be identified as characteristic of his distinctive style. These features as well as the filmmaker’s novelistic approach to narrative construction have become his own, artistic signature. As in Pulp Fiction, conventions of classical gangster films are incorporated and reworked so that it becomes something fresh and innovative. On the basis of Tarantino’s standing in the film industry due to Pulp Fiction, I wish to analyze his most significant film toward its representation of violence, redemption and morality through the generic codes of a fictional crime world. While Tarantino’s aptitude to construct original and manifold storylines in an unconventional mode is undeniable, the aesthetics of violence and articulations of values behind his style have been constantly controversial. Since his latest film Inglourious Basterds (2009) this issue seems relevant again, which was one of the reasons that prompted me to revisit his previous work. In my thesis I intend to explore the director’s vision and his means of creating movies. I argue that Quentin Tarantino creates a new style of cinema in Pulp Fiction by subverting classical film conventions, most notably, those of the gangster genre. In doing so I want to answer these questions: How does the filmmaker utilize stylistic elements to subvert classical movie genres? What impact do stylistic changes have on the representation of violence and ethics? This attempt finally seeks to capture the essence of the filmmaker’s style within a larger cultural and social context.

This book examines a set of theoretical perspectives that critically engage with the notion of postmodernism, investigating whether this concept is still useful to approach contemporary cinema. This question is explored through a discussion of the films written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, largely regarded as the epitome of postmodern cinema and considered here as theoretical contributions in their own right. Each chapter first presents key ideas proposed by a specific theorist and then puts them in conversation with Tarantino’s films. Jacques Rancière’s theory of art is used to reject postmodernism’s claims about the ‘death’ of the aesthetic image in contemporary cinema. Fredric Jameson’s and Slavoj Žižek’s dialectical thinking is mobilized to challenge simplistic, ideological readings of postmodern cinema in general, and Tarantino’s films in particular. Finally, the direct influence of Carol Clover’s psychoanalytical approach to the horror genre on Tarantino’s work is discussed to prove the director’s specific contribution to a theoretical understanding of contemporary film aesthetics.

Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Film Science, grade: 2,7, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: This thesis gives an analysis of technical as well as contextual items that Tarantino uses time and again in order to produce violent movies and give them his very personal touch. Doing that, he makes use of two basic elements: humor and an abundant amount of violence. It would sound like humor and violence do not go well together. The author argues that Tarantino accomplishes this feat with a seeming effortlessness which could just as well be an elaborate plan to criticize the use of violence and advocate a life free of crime. In order to do that, two scenes from different stages of Tarantino’s career were chosen, both personally and cinematically. The first scene that is analyzed is taken from his 1994 independent movie "Pulp Fiction". The second scene analyzed is from "Inglourious Basterds" from 2009. The two films in focus are different in various aspects such as the scenery and setting, the cultural and historical context or sociocultural circumstances at the time of their release, to name a few. This is why they make an excellent contrast to show the differences but also the similarities in Tarantino’s work to deduct a development from the comparison. The first focus of the thesis lies on the concept of violence. It gives a brief history both diachronically as well as synchronically. After that, the concept of humor is addressed, and with that why something is perceived as being funny (or maybe not). The idea of alienation between what the viewer or listener expects and what they are actually provided with plays an important role here. A conclusion to this thesis deals with why Tarantino chooses the depiction of (graphic) violence that he is known and famous for. Tarantino changes his modus operandi over the years when it comes to the representation of brutality in his movies. But he stays true to himself in the very core of the kind of violence he implicates in his films, using the techniques and stylistic devices he is known and loved for. Quentin Tarantino is often synonymous with making ultraviolent movies. Just as often, he is celebrated for his distinctive way of making movies which made him one of the most famous filmmakers in Hollywood. The fact that he has been in the business for almost 30 years proves that he does many things right even when critique of his representation of brutality arises with almost each of his films.

This thesis examines the critical response to Quentin Tarantino's representations of screen violence, primarily the violent content in his three revenge thrillers: Kill Bill (2003-4), Inglourious Basterds (2009), and Django Unchained (2012). Throughout Tarantino's career, critics have attacked him for aestheticizing bloodshed to such a degree that it becomes a glib, pop culture affectation, and the empirically larger amounts of violent content in the revenge thrillers has only encouraged this claim. This paper argues for a recontextualization of how Tarantino wields brutality throughout these three pictures, that the rise in graphic content reflects a greater engagement with social-moral concerns in a manner that is both socially responsible - to echo Susan Sontag's views on visual representations of violence in Regarding the Pain of Others (2003) - and creatively consistent among those artists looking to retain their cultural significance as they age.
