Affect and Social Media is an edited collection of twenty bite sized articles by leading scholars from across disciplinary boundaries. It is comprised of four distinct but related sections which are interspersed with artistic illustrations, depicting the affectivities that flow through social media. The term ‘affect’ denotes a rather slippery concept that is not as easily caught as for example ‘emotion’ or ‘feeling’. Quite often it denotes a more than or an excess to that which is felt in the human body or indexed through cultural grids of meaning. It can exist in ways which defy expectations, conventions, and representations. It is often understood as that which is vital to the emergence of the new and hence socio-cultural revolution. As life shifts ever more on-line, we find ourselves caught up in the affective flows of computer mediated practices into an ever expanding and indeterminate horizon. This compilation of articles that were initially presented at an international conference in East London, were selected on the basis of their ability to depict and conceptualise these radical movements of sociality.

Sexting. Cyberbullying. Narcissism. Social media has become the dominant force in young people's lives, and each day seems to bring another shocking tale of private pictures getting into the wrong hands, or a lament that young people feel compelled to share their each and every thought with the entire world. Drawing on a large-scale survey and interviews with students on thirteen college campuses, Freitas finds that what young people are overwhelmingly concerned with--what they really want to talk about--is happiness. The Happiness Effect is an eye-opening window into their first-hand experiences of social media and its impact on them.

"There can be no doubt that social media has fundamentally transformed how people relate to each other and navigate the social environment of the contemporary era. While social media makes it easier than ever before for people to connect, it can also lead to negative effects on mental health and well-being, as it facilitates social comparison which, ironically, can leave people feeling more isolated and detached. Chapter One of this book explores how social movement actors utilize Instagram to deliver complex political messages and discusses the importance of understanding the possibilities and dangers of social media's influence on political reality. Chapter Two analyses online social comparison from a social psychological perspective and highlights the differences between its occurrence in face-to-face and social media contexts, as well as the implications for mental health. Chapter Three focuses on the influence of Instagram upon millennials' purchase intention via celebrity endorsement and other Instagram visuals, particularly in connection with the use of color and the visual attractiveness of celebrities. Lastly, Chapter Four addresses the semiotic aspects of Instagram by comparing a typical semiotic communication model to Instagram's communication model and explaining design aspects of Instagram's model"--

Social media has become an integral part of modern society, with millions of people using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok to connect with friends, family, and strangers across the world. While social media can have many positive effects, such as fostering social connections, it can also have negative consequences for mental health. Studies have shown that excessive use of social media can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, especially among younger people. Social media platforms often present an idealized version of people's lives, leading users to compare their own lives unfavorably and feel inadequate. Additionally, the constant barrage of news, opinions, and notifications can be overwhelming, leading to stress and burnout. However, the relationship between social media and mental health is complex and multifaceted. While excessive use can have negative effects, social media can also be a valuable source of support, information, and community for people who are isolated or marginalized. Some studies have also found that social media use can improve well-being and reduce loneliness when used in moderation. Overall, the impact of social media on mental health is a topic of ongoing research and debate, and it is important for individuals to be aware of their social media use and take steps to manage it in a way that is healthy and balanced. An illuminating study of the complex relationship between children and media in the digital age Now, as never before, young people are surrounded by media—thanks to the sophistication and portability of the technology that puts it literally in the palms of their hands. Drawing on data and empirical research that cross many fields and continents, authors Valkenburg and Piotrowski examine the role of media in the lives of children from birth through adolescence, addressing the complex issues of how media affect the young and what adults can do to encourage responsible use in an age of selfies, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. This important study looks at both the sunny and the dark side of media use by today’s youth, including why and how their preferences change throughout childhood, whether digital gaming is harmful or helpful, the effects of placing tablets and smartphones in the hands of toddlers, the susceptibility of young people to online advertising, the legitimacy of parental concerns about media multitasking, and more.

The book tackles issues related to social media such as emotional and mental health, shortened attention spans, selective self-presentation and narcissism, the declining quality of interpersonal relationships, privacy and security, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, misinformation and online deception, and negative peer effects. It goes on to discuss social media and companies (loss of power, challenging control mechanisms) and societies as a whole (fake news, chatbots, changes in the workplace). The Dark Side of Social Media: Psychological, Managerial, and Societal Perspectives empowers readers to have a more holistic understanding of the consequences of utilizing social media. It does not necessarily argue that social media is a bad development, but rather serves to complement the numerous empirical findings on the "bright side" of social media with a cautionary view on the negative developments. Focuses on interpersonal communication through social media Focuses on psychology of media effects Explores social media issues on both an individual and societal level Documents the rise of social media from niche phenomenon to mass market Examines the differences between creating and consuming content

This report examines the relationship in the Nordic region between the well-being of young people and their consumption of social media. Is the growing use of social media by young people a problem for their personal well-being and their participation in non-digital communities in society? The main conclusion is that we cannot judge the consumption of social media as something unequivocally positive or negative for the well-being of young people, without relating to a number of specific conditions, which significantly nuances the picture. We must relate to who uses the social media, which media they use and how long time they spend. We must also relate to how social media is used. When we take into account the above-mentioned conditions, we find a number of effects from young people's consumption of social media, which you can read about in the report.

People have been complaining about social media for some time now. Some people oppose their presence at all. But is it that bad? Does it need to be removed? Only time can tell. But it is not wrong that social media is causing a side effect, but then everything has a side effect. The only thing that needs to be assessed is whether or not it is life-threatening bad. People have been debating that while there is a bad side to social media, it is only there because of the manner the people are using it.
