The study of leadership remains one of the most prevalent and perplexing topics of study for both theorists and practitioners alike. Every theory and model proposed offers the promise of success, yet these theories never quite deliver what is intended. Theory itself is not at fault and neither is the execution of any particular premise. The issue is that most theories seek only one best solution--that one answer that will serve as a panacea for all the ills of every organization. This book makes no such claim and, in fact, argues against a one-size-fits-all theory. In an age of multidimensional diversity and growing workplace complexity, any singular choice made in regard to leadership will only be partially successful at best. This being the case, leaders should stop seeking the perfect leadership scenario or theory and begin to integrate the better parts of all relevant theories already available, thus creating a model that best fits the organization's particular set of circumstances. To do so however requires a different view of organizations themselves. We must discard the pyramid-shaped organizational chart and design organizations around relationships that place the follower first where the leadership emphasis is on enhancing each individual, thereby allowing each individual to enhance themselves and thus the organization. This approach is called affective leadership.

Affect and Emotion includes a variety of chapters by some of the most prominent scholars in the area of emotions and leadership, as well as chapters by rising stars. These chapters chart the direction of future research in affect and leadership in four main areas. First, several of these chapters make a convincing argument that leaders use emotional labor and other forms of emotional displays to influence followers and team members. Leaders may use emotional labor to manage relational identities, or to create favorable impressions on followers and to create trust. Leaders' active emotional displays increase vision related performance and perception of transformational leadership. Second, one chapter reveals how emotions play an important role in leadership at every level, from within-person to organization-wide leadership. Leader's emotional labor plays an important role in several of these levels, with the exact method of performing emotional labor varying by level. A second chapter also examines levels of leadership, with a particular examination of the effects of leader emotional labor on close and distant leadership. Third, several of the chapters examine emotions from the authentic leadership and positive leadership perspectives, and two of these chapters focus on how psychological capital and authentic leadership skills help leaders be resilient and overcome obstacles. Fourth, two of the chapters show the role of affect and friendship ties to leadership research. One of these chapters examines the need to develop psychometrically sound measures of affect and friendship, whereas the other develops a model of how affect influences social network ties and informal leadership emergence. Taken together, these chapters illustrate four important research trends in emotions and leadership that are likely to grow in importance in the coming years.

Even if we don’t realise it, most of us are now familiar with the idea of ‘emotional labour’; that ‘service with a smile’ which everyone from cabin crew to restaurant or call centre staff is expected to give, irrespective of what they actually feel or think. This book considers the complex ways in which this need to show (or hide) particular emotions translates into job roles – specifically those of leaders or managers – where the relationships are lasting rather than transient, two-way rather than uni-directional and have complex, ongoing goals rather than straight-forward, one-off ones. The book contends that these differences contribute unique characteristics to the nature of the emotional labour required and expounds and explores this new genus within the ‘emotional labour’ species. The main theme of this book is the explication and exploration of emotional labour in the context of leadership and management. As such, it focuses both on how our understanding of emotional labour in this context enriches the original construct and where it deviates from it. Effective leadership is essential for an organization‘s success; hence, the ability to identify and define effective leadership is crucial. Technical expertise, superior performance, and established experience are no longer only criterion of effective leadership. Today effective leaders are defined by inspiring and motivating others, promoting a positive work environment, understanding and managing emotions, building bonds, communications, and influence, and so forth. Emotional Intelligence (EI) has an emerging track record of being linked to leadership performance. Emotional intelligence connects a leader‘s cognitive abilities with their emotional state.
