Afghanistan In The Cinema written by Mark Graham and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-07 with History categories.

In this timely critical introduction to the representation of Afghanistan in film, Mark Graham examines the often surprising combination of propaganda and poetry in films made in Hollywood and the East. Through the lenses of postcolonial theory and historical reassessment, Graham analyzes what these films say about Afghanistan, Islam, and the West and argues that they are integral tools for forming discourse on Afghanistan, a means for understanding and avoiding past mistakes, and symbols of the country's shaky but promising future. Thoughtfully addressing many of the misperceptions about Afghanistan perpetuated in the West, Afghanistan in the Cinema incorporates incisive analysis of the market factors, funding sources, and political agendas that have shaped the films. The book considers a range of films, beginning with the 1970s epics The Man Who Would Become King and The Horsemen and following the shifts in representation of the Muslim world during the Russian War in films such as The Beast and Rambo III. Graham then moves on to Taliban-era films such as Kandahar, Osama, and Ellipsis, the first Afghan film directed by a woman. Lastly, the book discusses imperialist nostalgia in films such as Charlie Wilson's War and destabilizing visions represented in contemporary works such as The Kite Runner.

Abstract The Small, Imperfect Cinema of Afghanistan - Through the Work of Roya Sadat This thesis investigates Afghan cinema, reborn two decades ago with the establishment of new modes of governance and influenced by all the changes this brought. Following Teshome H. Gabriel, the project examines Afghan cinema according to three core means of investigation, as laid out in his critical Third World film theory: text, production and reception. It then supplements Gabriel's schema with an analysis of the importance of education. After the fall of the Taliban, Afghanistan's post-conflict reconstruction and transition has been significantly shaped by neo-liberal economic policies that have strongly impacted its fragile film industry, as well as the country at large and its people's lives. This thesis looks closely at the current infrastructures for cinema in Afghanistan via the journeys that filmmaker Roya Sadat has made through them and the circumstances under which her films have been made. It focuses on the management of complex forms of technical production, the mobilization of skilled labor and professional expertise, and the deployment of substantial resources in a situation of extreme economic and social duress. Afghan culture is steeped in poetry and stories upon which its cinema draws. There is a hunger to tell stories. This thesis melds evaluations of extra-textual contexts with explorations of the cinematic language and narrative tropes of recent Afghan films in order to understand how this cinema connects and communicates with an Afghan audience.

Film History And Cultural Citizenship written by Tina Mai Chen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-19 with Art categories.

This new book investigates the relationship of film to history, power, memory, and cultural citizenship. The book is concerned with two central issues: firstly, the participation of film and filmmakers in articulating and challenging projects of modernity; and, secondly, the role of film in shaping particular understandings of self and other to evoke collective notions of belonging. These issues call for interdisciplinary and multi-layered analyses that are ideally met through dialogue across place, time, identities and genres. The contributors to this volume enable this dialogue by considering the ways in which cultural expression and identity expressed through film serve to create notions of belonging, group identity, and entitlement within modern societies.

This dissertation examines the image of the "Afghan" in films by Iranian filmmakers produced primarily from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. The films, most of which are about the Afghan refugee community in Iran, are studied in relation to the contemporaneous policies and rhetoric of the Islamic Republic regarding Afghans and Afghanistan, as well as in relation to trends in Iranian nationalism and in constructs of national identity. Aside from explaining how the films participated in contemporary debates about the Afghanistan crisis and about Iranian national identity, my project addresses the reasons for which filmmakers engaged with Afghan subjects in their works. My findings demonstrate that, in addition to an interest in raising awareness about the situation of Afghans (both in Afghanistan and in Iran) and in challenging the dominant constructs of national identity based predominantly on Shi'ism, the international critical reception and financial success of The White Balloon (1995) and Taste of Cherry (1997) were critical factors that motivated Iranian filmmakers. Furthermore the representations in those two films and others--such as Djomeh (2000), Delbaran (2001), and Baran (2001)--of the Afghan "Other" as an integral, productive member of a multicultural society reflect what Stuart Hall refers to as a new "regime of representation" as well as "multi-cultural" drift in Iranian society since the 1990s

Will I Live Tomorrow written by Sonia Nassery Cole and has been published by BenBella Books, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-01 with Social Science categories.

When Sonia Nassery Cole set out to film The Black Tulip in her homeland of Afghanistan, she knew the odds were against her; she was told time and time again that filming inside a war zone would be impossible. What she didn't anticipate was how intent the Taliban and its sympathizers were on halting the film's production—the crew encountered extortion, government corruption, kidnapping attempts, and death threats, even with around-the-clock security. Her cinematographer fled after two days, and many others followed. After 9/11, Cole wrote The Black Tulip, based on a true story of a real Afghan family. The plot was simple: After 2001, when the Taliban was routed, an Afghan family opened The Poet's Corner—a restaurant with an open microphone for all to read poetry, perform music, and tell their stories. But the Taliban didn't approve, and the family's new-found hope proved fleeting as it struggled to maintain the restaurant and its vibrant way of life. Selected as Afghanistan's official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2010 Academy Awards, The Black Tulip is a modern portrait of Afghanistan that captures the plight and resilience of its people. Without financial support from a studio or anyone else, Cole self-financed the film by mortgaging her home and selling her belongings. Then, with everything on the line, she left for Kabul to make the impossible possible and set out to gather the right people who would risk their lives and willingly be part of the production. In Will I Live Tomorrow?, Cole gives an intimate look into what went on behind the scenes of making a controversial film in the heart of a war-ravaged country—the looming terror the Taliban creates among Afghans everywhere and the challenges and fear the cast and crew faced every day. Will I Live Tomorrow? is a memoir about one woman's struggle to make a difference in a violent world.

Bahram Beyzaie is one of Iran's leading playwrights and auteur filmmakers. This book examines several of Beyzaie's films and plays and their preoccupation with the modalities and transformations of Iranian contemporary, historical and mythical identity from different perspectives. The chapters analyse Beyzaie's influential plays such as Arash and So Dies Pahlevan Akbar and his filmic magnum opuses such as The Crow, Bashu, the Little Stranger and Killing Mad Dogs from a range of critical perspectives including ecofeminist, sociopolitical, new-historicist, archetypal and psychoanalytical readings. They also explore Beyzaie's dialogue with filmic genres such as noir, different Iranian languages such as Gilaki, Iranian epics and ritual practices such as ta'ziyeh plays and javanmardi chivalry cults. Together, the chapters show how Beyzaie's works negotiate narratives of belonging and undermine the dominant exclusionist discourses in Iran, and how they use the resources of Iranian folk and performance traditions to comment on the position of women, children, intellectuals, and minorities in society.
