Liberia written by Frank Sherman and has been published by New Africa Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with History categories.

This work is a general introduction to Liberia. It is comprehensive in scope covering a wide range of subjects from a historical and contemporary perspective. It is intended for members of the general public. But some members of the academic community may also find this work to be useful in their fields. Subjects covered include an overview of the country and its geography including all the regions - known as counties - and the different ethnic groups who live there. The work is also a historical study of Liberia since the founding of the country by freed black American slaves. One of the subjects covered in the book is the conflicts - including wars - the new black American settlers had with the indigenous people. The freed slaves who, together with their descendants, came to be known as Americo-Liberians, dominated the country and excluded the indigenous people from the government and other areas of national life for almost 160 years until the Americo-Liberian rulers were overthrown in a military coup in 1980. It was one of the bloodiest military coups in modern African history. The soldiers who overthrew the government were members of native tribes and were hailed as liberators by the indigenous people who had been dominated and had suffered discrimination at the hands of Americo-Liberians throughout the nation's history. Some of them were even sold into slavery in Panama by the Americo-Liberian rulers in the 1930s, prompting an investigation of the labour scandal by the League of Nations. Others were forced to work on various projects within Liberia itself and became virtual slaves in their own country. Americo-Liberians saw the natives as inferior to them and treated them that way. The mistreatment of the members of native tribes by the Americo-Liberians was one of the main reasons native soldiers of the Liberian army decided to overthrow the government. The book also covers the Liberian civil war which destroyed the country in the 1990s and early 2000s, a conflict which also had historical roots. The conflict is attributed to the inequalities between Americo-Liberians and the indigenous people which existed throughout the nation's history. But its immediate cause was the brutalities Liberians suffered under the military rulers who overthrew the Americo-Liberian-dominated government. Another major subject covered in the book is the ethnic composition of Liberia. The work looks at all the ethnic groups in the country and their home regions - counties - as well as their cultures, providing a comprehensive picture of life in contemporary times in Africa's oldest republic. The national culture of Liberia in general is also another subject addressed in the book. The author has also addressed another very important subject: indigenous forms of writing invented by the members of different tribes or ethnic groups in Liberia. The indigenous scripts are a major contribution to civilisation and Liberia stands out among all the countries on the African continent as the country which has the largest number of these forms of writing. People going to Liberia for the first time, and anybody else who wants to learn about this African country, may find this work to be useful.

Sierra Leone written by Bankole Kamara Taylor and has been published by New Africa Pres this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02 with History categories.

This work looks at Sierra Leone, its people and history. Other subjects are also covered to provide a general introduction to the country. It is not intended for academic specialists, and it is not an in-depth study of the country. It is written from the perspective of a layman or general reader who simply wants to know some important things about this West African country. Sierra Leone is one of the oldest countries in Africa. And before it won independence in 1961, it was also one of the oldest colonies on the continent. Only two African countries won independence in 1961, both from the same colonial power, Great Britain. They were Sierra Leone, on 27 April, and Tanganyika on 9 December. The history of Sierra Leone is also one of the most tragic. But Sierra Leone still is one of the most fascinating countries on the continent in spite of the horrendous tragedy it went through during the civil war in the 1990s. The fact that it emerged intact from that brutal conflict is strong testimony to the resilience of the Sierra Leonean people against overwhelming odds which could have broken weaker souls.

Africa Its Geography People And Products written by William Edward Burghardt Du Bois and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.

W. E. B. Du Bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. He profoundly shaped black political culture in the United States through his founding role in the NAACP, as well as internationally through the Pan-African movement. Du Bois's sociological and historical research on African-American communities and culture broke ground in many areas, including the history of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Du Bois was also a prolific author of novels, autobiographical accounts, innumerable editorials and journalistic pieces, and several works of history. Written in very accessible prose, these two booklets, originally published in 1930, allowed W. E. B. Du Bois to reach a wide audience with an interest in Africa. What is so incredible about the two Africa booklets is their lasting relevance and value to the study of Africa today. Coupling Du Bois's breadth of scholarship with his passion for the subjects, the analyses in these booklets are integral to the study of Africa. Many of his arguments foreshadowed the issues and debates regarding Africa in the twentieth century. Expertly synthesized in an introduction by Emmanuel Akyeampong, this edition of the two Africa booklets is essential for anyone interested in African history.

Ethiopia written by Yohannes K. Mekonnen and has been published by Intercontinental Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04 with History categories.

This book is a general survey of Ethiopia as a country and its people. It focuses on many subjects about Ethiopia's history, geography, politics and the diverse cultures of its people who collectively constitute one of the most fascinating countries in the history of Africa and of the entire world. It starts from the beginning when foundations were laid for what was later to become the country of Ethiopia which is one of the oldest civilisations in the world. Ethiopia also has the distinction of being the oldest Christian nation in Africa and one of the three oldest Christian countries in the world after Georgia and Armenia. Ethiopia converted to Christianity centuries before Europe did. And it is mentioned in the Bible many times. The book also covers Eritrea - its people, history and culture - but not in as much detail as it does Ethiopia. Still, the information about Eritrea is enough to serve as a simple and general introduction to the country. But the main focus of the book is on Ethiopia.

Africa And The West written by Godfrey Mwakikagile and has been published by Nova Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.

Besides her natural beauty, the scenery and the climate, and her abundant wildlife and natural resources, Africa is probably best known as the homeland of hundreds of millions of people who live in abject poverty. Millions are wracked by disease and blinded by ignorance. And just as many go hungry every day. But there is something else which also distinguishes Africa: lack of unity among her people. That is one of the main reasons why they were conquered by foreigners, and why Africa is still weak and poor today. There is no other continent which is endowed with so much in terms of natural resources. But there is also no other continent where it has been so easy for foreigners to take what does not belong to them. This book began as a self-examination of the African personality in an attempt to understand Africa's place in the world, especially in relation to the West.
