Twenty-first-century Africa is in a process of dynamic economic transformation. However, challenges remain in areas such as structural reform, governance, market turbulence, commodity pricing, and geopolitics. There is a critical need for African economies to assess growth models and strategies to foster increased, sustained, and inclusive growth. The book contributes to contemporary debate on key questions facing the continent, such as: How can Africa achieve deeper integration into the rules-based multilateral trading system and the global economy? What approaches and next steps are possible, according to economic and trade policymakers? What supportive roles can multilateral and regional institutions play? This volume is a product of the Fourth China Round Table, which took place during the WTO's Tenth Ministerial Conference, held in Kenya in December 2015. Supported by independent expert analyses, the book proposes a range of African perspectives on the role of trade, the WTO, and its future agenda.

Africa And The World Trade Organization written by Richard E. Mshomba and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-30 with Business & Economics categories.

Mshomba provides a systematic study of Africa as it relates to the World Trade Organization. He examines the WTO's enforcement mechanism; the WTO's broadened mandate, illustrated by the Agreement on Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights; agriculture in the Doha Round; issues relating to transparency in government procurement; and the endeavor to streamline assistance to developing countries through an "Aid for Trade" initiative. The author integrates theory and practice, with a clear presentation of important economic concepts. He provides a rigorous analysis of key issues and proposals. He presents African countries as having an important role to play in the WTO, especially as they actively engage in bargaining through various coalitions. Mshomba acknowledges that WTO negotiations will always be complex and at times contentious due to wide economic and political differences between countries. He views the differences, however, as creating opportunities for a mutually beneficial exchange of goods, services, and ideas.

Essay from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: A, University of Cape Coast (CENTRE FOR AFRICAN AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES), language: English, abstract: Although international free trade is relatively a new practice, many forms of trade between different parts of the world have been in existence for a long time. The end of World War II, there had been improvements in relations among states. Thereby, creating interconnectedness among between states and this has caused upsurge in global trade liberalisation. These developments have made the exchange of goods and services among states easier than any point in modern history. As a result, many scholarly works have examined the importance of international trade and globalisation to countries across the world. This essay adds to the existing debate by exploring the four advantages and three disadvantages of international trade and globalisation to Africa. The essay is presented in four sections; the first part gives a brief historical account of international trade. The second section explores the benefits or the opportunities of international trade and globalisation to Africa, and the third section discusses the disadvantages of international trade to the continent. The final section suggests ways by which African countries to approach international trade and globalisation. Although international free trade is relatively a new practice, many forms of trade between different parts of the world have been in existence for a long time. The end of World War II, there had been improvements in relations among states. Thereby, creating interconnectedness among between states and this has caused upsurge in global trade liberalisation. Developing countries and particularly African countries must not think that they are asking for charity by demanding development-oriented outcomes. Their demands are justified not only on the basis of the promise of Doha Ministerial Declarations and Decisions but also on any calculation of give and take in the multilateral trade negotiations. Developing countries, particularly African and least-developed countries (LDCs), are not free riders in the multilateral trading system. In fact they have offered more concessions than their developed country partners in the Uruguay Round and the WTO. Their concessions are not limited to binding themselves to stringent multilateral rules in new areas such as trade-related intellectual property rights (Agreement on TRIPS), trade-related investment measures (Agreement on TRIMS) and services (General Agreement on Trade in Services). Even in the area of market access their commitments go far beyond those of the developed countries. Hence developing countries should not be on the defensive. They have contributed and continue to contribute to the multilateral trading system, often far beyond their capacities and certainly more than their developed country partners.

This three-volume set presents the results of a research project initiated by the African Economic Research Consortium. The project intended to identify and examine the critical analytical and policy issues involved in Africa's economic links with the rest of the world, particularly in the context of the emerging global trading system. The project had two distinct but closely related component parts. The first was based on empirical, region-wide analysis and was designed to provide the framework for the menu of issues explored.
