I decided to assemble this compilation because of the numerous African American marriages that are working. Though books have been written about fathers and what they mean to daughters, sons and mothers, I never came across a book that served as a tribute to husbands, especially African American husbands. I believe they are the foundation of the family. Why husbands? Because no matter what other role they may play-father, brother, son and nephew-it is the solid husband-wife relationship from which solid families are built. I strongly believe that a man who has a relationship with God and a loving, caring, respectful relationship with his mother knows how to love, care for and respect his wife. I often tell people when talking about my husband, "Yes I would marry him again!" I am in awe at the various responses I receive. "Oh that's beautiful." "He must be a special man." "Girl you got a good one." However the response that has always stayed with me was from a black man who said to me, "I'm glad to hear a black woman speak with such pride, love and respect for her husband. Thank you my sister". The truth of the matter is, I know there are women out there that feel just as I do when I say "Yes, I would marry him again". These women would be willing to share their stories with others. Unfortunately, we do not verbalize it enough. Some would prefer to continue to portray black men in general, and black husbands in particular as abusive, lazy, absent fathers, cheating husbands, and non-caring good-for-nothing men. However, I know that this is not true. I have been blessed to be married to my husband Kenneth Demire Gibbs Sr.-a strong example of black manhood-for 30 years. I will share our story with you later.

A distinguished Stanford law professor examines the steep decline in marriage rates among the African American middle class, and offers a paradoxical-nearly incendiary-solution. Black women are three times as likely as white women to never marry. That sobering statistic reflects a broader reality: African Americans are the most unmarried people in our nation, and contrary to public perception the racial gap in marriage is not confined to women or the poor. Black men, particularly the most successful and affluent, are less likely to marry than their white counterparts. College educated black women are twice as likely as their white peers never to marry. Is Marriage for White People? is the first book to illuminate the many facets of the African American marriage decline and its implications for American society. The book explains the social and economic forces that have undermined marriage for African Americans and that shape everyone's lives. It distills the best available research to trace the black marriage decline's far reaching consequences, including the disproportionate likelihood of abortion, sexually transmitted diseases, single parenthood, same sex relationships, polygamous relationships, and celibacy among black women. This book centers on the experiences not of men or of the poor but of those black women who have surged ahead, even as black men have fallen behind. Theirs is a story that has not been told. Empirical evidence documents its social significance, but its meaning emerges through stories drawn from the lives of women across the nation. Is Marriage for White People? frames the stark predicament that millions of black women now face: marry down or marry out. At the core of the inquiry is a paradox substantiated by evidence and experience alike: If more black women married white men, then more black men and women would marry each other. This book not only sits at the intersection of two large and well- established markets-race and marriage-it responds to yearnings that are widespread and deep in American society. The African American marriage decline is a secret in plain view about which people want to know more, intertwining as it does two of the most vexing issues in contemporary society. The fact that the most prominent family in our nation is now an African American couple only intensifies the interest, and the market. A book that entertains as it informs, Is Marriage for White People? will be the definitive guide to one of the most monumental social developments of the past half century.

In 2000, only 42.1% of African American families were married compared to 62% of Caucasian families. Then in 2010, the rate dropped again to 38.8% for married African American families and 58.9% for married Caucasian families (McKinnon & Bennett, 2005; U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). As the percentage of African American married couples has decreased, the number of couples in the African American community that have never married has increased. African American men were more likely than Caucasian men to be never married: 40.2 percent and 24.9 percent respectively. The comparable figures for women were 38.3 percent and 15.7 percent (McKinnon, 2003; U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). James (1998) believes the continuous decline in the prevalence of marriage among African American men indicates profound changes in the typical life path of young men. In a study by Wilson (2003) black men revealed their resistance to marriage because there are multiple women available for each man. Thus, a contingency is constructed along these lines: If the desire to marry is present, especially among African American women, but rates of unmarried African American men and women remains high, then the transition from desire to action is mediated possibly by considerations unique to African American men. This review focuses on literature that explores and highlights contributing and associated factors related to African American men and the factors influencing or that have influenced their decisions to marry. African American and Black are used interchangeably in this study. Black is also used to include men of color of African & Caribbean descent who were born and raised in the United States. Multiple aspects of African American men and their relationships were explored. In particular, identity formation, decision-making, development (such as race, gender, personality and education), the impact of slavery and racism, gender roles and influence of media was explored. This research aimed to explore the determining factors heterosexual African American men report as salient in their decision to get married. This researcher hypothesized that a theory would emerge from this qualitative study that amplifies existing literature related to African American men and their decisions to marry or not marry. Methodology included qualitative interviews based on a grounded theory approach (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) to identify elements that address the research question. Participants (N=10, 18-45, three years of marriage or less) were recruited through flyers and word of mouth referrals. Data were analyzed and stored, using computer coding program NVIVO 10 (Nvivo10, 2012). NVIVO 10 explores and develops themes of the participants analyzed based on strategies adopted from grounded theory. The study exposed a process which Black men go through to make their decision to get married. Within this process, the study indicated 30 key reasons that aided in the decision making process for Black men to say, "I do." Some of these reasons include feeling that she makes him better, that he did not feel pressure to make the decision, that the relationship felt organic and seamless and that people in his life like her and approved of her. In addition, race was also proven to be a significant part of the process. Men expressed such thoughts that getting married legitimized them as human and capable of loving, but as a single Black male they were perceived as a threat and/or violent. Clinical implications, strengths, limitations, and future research directions were also discussed in this study. This study showed that Black men do want to get married and that 30 key reasons help them in their decision making process. In addition, their experiences as Black men impact their decision from who they decide to marry to how they are perceived by others.

An Exploration Of Marital Attitudes Held By African American Men written by Mary Kaye Johnson (N.) and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Psychology categories.

Research examining marriage in the United States indicates that the institution of marriage is rapidly declining, particularly among African Americans. A prevalent factor accounting for this decline includes the incongruence of marital attitudes held by African American men and women. Current theoretical explanations generally exclude the study of male marital experiences. Therefore, an exploration of the male experience of marriage is needed for a more comprehensive understanding for the overall decline of African American marriages. The purpose of this qualitative study was to (1) examine the marital attitudes held by happily married African American men; (2) gain insight about how these men came to marry and remain happily married; and (3) establish pre-marital programming within the African American community. The goal of pre-marital programming is to promote the occurrence of healthy, long-lasting Black marriages. The participants were six African American men who comprised one focus group. The data obtained from the focus group indicated that despite the abundance of obstacles to marriage, participants valued marriage and engage in happy marriages. The participants indicated that their attitudes and values regarding marriage derived mainly from a supportive upbringing and observing their own parents. However, the men agreed that the majority of African American men lack this type of upbringing and role models, which negatively impacts their decision to marry or maintain happy marriages. The participants reported hesitance about attending pre-marital programming but felt that the programs could be beneficial within the African American community. Side-Stepping Obstacles of United Love (S.O.U.L. MATE) is a pre-marital program developed from the marital attitudes and recommendations provided by the participants. The program would be federally funded and held twice a month, annually at local churches and community centers. S.O.U.L. MATE would function to educate Black men about common misconceptions of marriage and the current problems affecting the state of marriage within the African American community. Education is accomplished through four tracks, each with an unique objective: (1) With This Ring, I Thee Wed, (2) To Love & To Cherish, (3) In Sickness & In Health, and (4) For Richer & For Poorer.

This book traces the lives of the author and other African-American women she interviewed about their African-American fathers. The author states that the most powerful relationship an African-American woman will ever have with a male is the one she has or doesn't have with her father. Whether present or absent Houston-Little asserts: fathers impact their daughter's lives in ways that sometimes defy description. If young African-American girls grow up with a loving, involved father in her life, the young girl seems to do well and lead a balanced life. She doesn't appear to be haunted by serious emotional and physical illnesses. While on the other hand, when a young girl does not have any relationship with her father or one that she perceives is less than adequate, serious issues may arise. Often a relationship that is perceived as less than adequate is as devastating as not having a relationship with her father at all.If a young girl's relationship with her father is non-existent or less than adequate, it is at this point that the "drama" appears to begin."Drama" refers to a series of actions, reactions that the young girl, adolescent, soon to be adult female initiates and responds to a result of her perception.Perceptions that lead to "drama" are that the young girl in question believes her father does not care/love her. She may also believe that she can't trust anyone, especially men. No matter how hard she tries, she may also believe she'll never be good enough in any tasks she undertakes. These different "scenes," frames of reference affect the young girl and all those with whom she interacts. It's almost as though the young girl has a script from which she takes her cues. Often no one with whom she interacts even has a clue that a script even exists. This kind of miscuing or absence of cues for the unsuspecting participants, friend, husband, lover, son, professional associate, more often than not, leads to conflictual emotional relationships. Other relationships end abruptly, the young girl or adolescent or adult has no clue why. Some insights into how we construct our inner thinking, what these thoughts are based on help us all to negotiate successful relationships. This book explores the author's and other women's perceptions of their "drama" with their fathers. The effects of the "drama," misunderstandings and the inability to emotionally connect are explored.Hope springs eternal as these women and I look at ways to gradually change the direction of absent or "less than adequate relationships" between fathers and daughters. Finally, the writer suggests ways that anyone interested in the health and strength of African-American families can help to accomplish that goal.Stronger, healthier individuals make stronger, healthier families. Stronger, healthier families make stronger, healthier communities. Everyone stands to benefit.

This important volume takes a life course approach in sharing empirical insights on the family experiences of African American males in socioeconomic and political contexts. Representing fields ranging from developmental psychology to public health and sociology to education, chapters identify challenges facing black men and boys in the U.S., as well as family and community sources of support and resilience. Survey findings and exemplar case studies illustrate stressors and risk factors uniquely affecting African American communities, and tailored prevention and intervention strategies are described at the personal, family, and societal levels. These interdisciplinary perspectives not only encourage additional research, but inspire the continued development of appropriate interventions, relevant practice, and equitable policy. Included in the coverage: • The adjustment and development of African American males: Conceptual frameworks and emerging research opportunities. • A trauma-informed approach to affirming the humanity of African American boys and supporting healthy transitions to manhood. • Humanizing developmental science to promote positive development of young men of color. • Families, prisoner reentry, and reintegration. • Safe spaces for vulnerability: New perspectives on African Americans who struggle to be good fathers. • They can’t breathe: Why neighborhoods matter for the health of African American men and boys. Promoting diversity in the research agenda to reflect a diverse population, Boys and Men in African American Families is an invaluable reference for research professionals particularly interested in sociology, public policy, anthropology, urban and rural studies, and African American studies. Survey and ethnographic studies of poverty, inequality, family processes, and child, adolescent, and adult health and development are featured.
