Though African Americans are less likely to be diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), when they are, it is more chronic, severe, and they are less likely to undergo treatment in comparison to Whites (Williams et al., 2007). Also, while there is growing research emphasizing the importance of religion in the lives of Blacks there remains little to be known about how to integrate religion and mental health treatment. Due to the nuances involved in being Christian and African American the medical and mental health providers are lacking an understanding of how best to work with this subgroup. The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experiences of Christian African American women who are depressed and inquire about their relief seeking efforts across their medical (mental health), religious and informal sources. In order to best meet the mental health needs of African American women with depression it is imperative to first understand the cultural nuances that make up the person in order to incorporate all aspects of their identity into treatment. Nine women were interviewed and the data was analyzed from a transcendental phenomenological perspective (Moustakas, 1994). The results of the study indicate those who felt comfortable sharing their spiritual beliefs with their medical providers were also more open to medical treatment and more likely to report satisfying treatment overall. The findings highlight important knowledge in providing culturally relevant care to the mental health needs of this subgroup.

The Great Depression hit Americans hard, but none harder than African Americans and the working poor. To Ask for an Equal Chance explores black experiences during this period and the intertwined challenges posed by race and class. "Last hired, first fired," black workers lost their jobs at twice the rate of whites, and faced greater obstacles in their search for economic security. Black workers, who were generally urban newcomers, impoverished and lacking industrial skills, were already at a disadvantage. These difficulties were intensified by an overt, and in the South legally entrenched, system of racial segregation and discrimination. New federal programs offered hope as they redefined government's responsibility for its citizens, but local implementation often proved racially discriminatory. As Cheryl Lynn Greenberg makes clear, African Americans were not passive victims of economic catastrophe or white racism; they responded to such challenges in a variety of political, social, and communal ways. The book explores both the external realities facing African Americans and individual and communal responses to them. While experiences varied depending on many factors including class, location, gender and community size, there are also unifying and overarching realities that applied universally. Objective: Depression is a common psychiatric condition, and despite the availability of effective treatments, this condition is largely under-recognized and undertreated, particularly among African Americans. One reason for this discrepancy may be that depressive symptoms often co-occur with physical health conditions, which can influence both the reporting of depressive symptomology, willingness to seek care, and the type of healthcare provider sought. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between treatment-seeking characteristics and diagnostic attributions of depression among community-dwelling African American adults. Methods: Data come from the National Survey of American Life, a nationally representative sample of African Americans, Caribbean blacks and non-Hispanic whites. Analysis is limited to African Americans (N = 3,432), of whom 64% were women. Lifetime history of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) was assessed using the Composite International Diagnostic Inventory (CIDI). Participants were categorized into four diagnostic groups: Never MDD, MDD never attributed to physical health problems (e.g., typical depression), MDD sometimes attributed to physical health problems (e.g., complicated depression), and MDD always attributed to physical health problems (e.g., physical depression). Whether or not care was sought for depression, and the type of healthcare provider seen, was assessed by self-report. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the cross-sectional relationship between treatment-seeking characteristics and diagnostic type of depression. Models were adjusted for age, sex, insurance status, health behaviors, and comorbid health conditions. Results: 441 (12.8%) of the sample met CIDI criteria for MDD, and of these 66.7% were classified as typical depression, 18.1% were complicated depression, and 15.2% were physical depression. In fully-adjusted models, seeking treatment from a mental health professional was significantly associated with diagnosis of complicated depression (Odds ratio (OR): 5.53; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 2.27 - 13.43) as opposed to typical depression. In adjusted analysis treatment-seeking from a family doctor was significantly associated with diagnosis of physical depression (OR: 2.94; 95% CI: 1.20 0́3 7.19) as opposed to typical depression. Seeking care from three or more different types of healthcare providers was significantly associated with diagnosis of complicated depression (OR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.13 - 3.92) relative to typical depression. There was no significant relationship between seeing multiple providers and physical depression. Conclusions: Type of healthcare provider sought for care for depressive symptoms is significantly related to how those depressive symptoms are diagnosed. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that healthcare providers influence whether depressive symptomology is attributed to physical health problems. However, this study cannot definitively differentiate the role of personal choice in seeking particular types of care providers from differences in assessment and attribution of depressive symptomology by types of providers. Future research is necessary to determine the factors related to both choosing a care provider when experiencing psychiatric symptoms and how different types of providers assess depressive symptoms and confer diagnosis.

African Americans have historically and presently erased from the conversation about mental health both within and outside the community. In an effort to reduce the stigma disparaging the severity of mental health issues in the African American community, I conducted research about how art and literature may be used to destigmatize black depression and anxiety. I wrote and illustrated this book targeted towards black children (although anyone can read it!) in an effort to start a conversation where I saw one was lacking. This book discusses anxiety & depression, stigma, coping competencies, and much more in regards to mental health!
