The small Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago have been treated as a single political entity for less than one hundred years. A union of two separate colonies started by Great Britain and Spain, each island has a substantially different ethnic makeup reflecting distinct lines of development. Tobago was first claimed by the English in the 16th century. Overwhelmingly African, its few European influences are almost exclusively English and Protestant. Economically, it has been a plantation colony for most of its recorded history, but in recent years has included tourism as part of its economic structure. In contrast, Trinidad is an outstanding example of a racial and cultural kaleidoscope, with a considerably diversified economic base made up of agricultural, extractive, manufacturing, tourist, and financial industries. Annexed by the British 200 years ago, this one time Spanish colony was strongly influenced by French creole culture and has become further diversified by immigrants from British India, China, Italy, Lebanon, and the West Indies. Compiled by Michael Anthony, renowned Trinidadian writer, the Historical Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago brings together in one volume complete and easy-to-find information on this small but fascinating Caribbean country. Its concise dictionary entries describe the important people, places, events, and institutions of the nation as well as its society, culture, and economy. The comprehensive bibliography provides scholars with an important resource for further information on the islands. Includes maps and a chronology.

Photography is the emphasis of Edison Boodoosingh's book, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO – A Caribbean Expression of Colourful Diversity. The photographer seeks to give a probing pictorial perspective into the natural, social, economical and cultural character of this fascinating Caribbean nation of some 1.3 million people. The book is organised into seven sections: People & Culture, Architecture & Monuments, National Festivals, Eco-systems & Natural Wonders, Commerce & Industry, Sights & Scenes and The Faces of the Races. Whilst the vast array of wonderful photographs is the chief protagonist in the narrative of this book, there is a complementing balance of a well written series of insightful and informative supplemental articles and captions which give a qualified literary dimension. This pictorial reportage gives a 'through-the-lens' view of the modern face of the culture of Trinidad and Tobago. It is a perspective that captures facets of daily life which are based on a remarkable mixture of historical and social elements. These components are principally derived from a rich vein of such sub-cultures including the aboriginal Amerindians, Western Europeans, West Africans, East Indians, Chinese, Middle Easterners and sundry extra regional influences. This unique blend of cultural ingredients is a result of the great demographic redistribution and population infusion of the region which began during the nation's formative years in the modern era, roughly between the 16th and the 19th centuries. Geographically and ecologically, from the seaside, the country plains and into the lush hillside regions, the photographer snaps a broad and enthralling range of the nation's natural habitat. This kaleidoscope of scenic features make up a series of quite varied and expansive biological systems and physical landscapes which form the rich environmental complex of Trinidad and Tobago. The stunning photography across the pages of this volume gives a compelling and discerning visual commentary of this unique Caribbean nation. The wide assortment of images highlights the distinctly intricate cultural network of people and places, along with, characters and customs, mingling in the colourful social ambience of their local habitat. The surrounding backdrop is adorned with elaborate facades of tropical flora and fauna. It is altogether, a beautiful presentation of Trinidad and Tobago.

Identity and diversity in all its forms present major challenges to countries seeking to best equip citizens with the skills to participate effectively in their diverse societies. This investigation into citizenship education in Trinidad and Tobago produced information about: the type, nature, and variety of programs being offered; the topics covered in these programs; the approaches and methodologies being used; and the groups that participate in the programs. It also highlighted the fact that government and civil society organizations are involved in citizenship education. Additionally, the investigation provided opportunities for individuals and organizations to identify the challenges of being a citizen in the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-religious society of Trinidad and Tobago. Participation in the search conference which collected information for the study, provided opportunities for individuals and organizations to share concerns about their work. Primary data were collected in a questionnaire given to organizations in the sample, in meetings, and in face-to-face and telephone interviews. Among the concerns and issues identified and discussed were: values, identity, difference and diversity, inequalities; citizenship and the good citizen; democracy and governance; the socio-economic situation and its impact on citizens; the ideology and structure of the education system; and the content, delivery evaluation and impact of citizenship education programs. A list of participants at the Search Conference is appended. (BT).
