Many volumes have been written in South Africa and elsewhere about the African Independent Churches, now know as African Indigenous or African Initiated Churches. Numerous academics have received their degrees by writing theses about these churches whose members constitute about 30% of all Christians in South Africa. This book is different because it is not written by outside researchers but by two leaders of the African Indigenous Churches themselves. While there have been a few small publications which were written by these Christians about their own beliefs and practices, this is the first comprehensive book in which they have been able to speak for themselves. Everyone who is interested in the future of Christianity in South Africa would need to read this book.

In the continent where Christianity is experiencing its most rapid growth, a great deal of this expansion is taking place in churches founded by Africans for Africans. These churches are often referred to as 'independent' or 'indigenous' churches, to distinguish them from the 'historic' or 'mission-founded' churches planted during the colonial period by evangelists from Europe and North America. Diverse as they are, the attractiveness of these African Initiatives in Christianity (AICs) stems from the serious attempt they make to express and live out their faith in genuinely African cultural forms and styles. In this new book, two African theologians and church leaders -- one from an historic church, one from an AIC -- offer an insightful introduction into this phenomenon. While their main focus is on what the growth of African Initiatives in Christianity implies for the future of the ecumenical movement in Africa and around the world, they also examine some key teachings of the AICs and trace their roots in African church history since the first century.

The Role Of Women In African Indigenous Churches written by Alice Obare and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with categories.

From their inception African Indigenous churches accepted the parallel roles of male and female in leadership. This may have been due to the fact that before the advent of Christianity, women were active participants in the traditional religions. Hence, when Christianity came along, though their contribution was curtailed in the mainstream church, women were welcomed and played an instrumental role in indigenous churches. However, over time, they are once again relegated to auxiliary positions. Women are denied admittance to the highest echelons of church leadership. What led to the creation of these roadblocks? The study will focus on the Ruwe Holy Ghost Church as an example of gender stratification in ministry. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is the Pauline teachings. Paul forbade women to teach or have authority over men. Another reason is the hand of the colonial administration in the exclusion of women from leadership roles. The purpose of the study is to express the disquiet among the younger generation of congregants who are desirous for their faith to move into the 21st century in its doctrine on this issue. The youth are living in a context where culture and their awakening feminist consciousness are in conflict. This point needs to be addressed. The paper will evaluate contextual theological perspectives and their influence on women's participation in the church's leadership. The study will use key informant interviews as well as literature review of works by contextual theologians and feminist religious scholars. The results are that there are certain leadership positions that are exclusively reserved for men and the church leadership needs to reconsider its stand on this matter.
