How did the Ghanaian state, after flirtation with structuralist theories and state intervention in the early 1960s, followed by persistent resistance to fiscal correction and a long economic slide in the 1970s and early 1980s, turn the economy around?

Ninety years after W.E.B. Du Bois first articulated the need for "the equivalent of a black Encyclopedia Britannica," Kwame Anthony Appiah and Henry Louis Gates Jr., realized his vision by publishing Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience in 1999. This new, greatly expanded edition of the original work broadens the foundation provided by Africana. Including more than one million new words, Africana has been completely updated and revised. New entries on African kingdoms have been added, bibliographies now accompany most articles, and the encyclopedia's coverage of the African diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean has been expanded, transforming the set into the most authoritative research and scholarly reference set on the African experience ever created. More than 4,000 articles cover prominent individuals, events, trends, places, political movements, art forms, business and trade, religion, ethnic groups, organizations and countries on both sides of the Atlantic. African American history and culture in the present-day United States receive a strong emphasis, but African American history and culture throughout the rest of the Americas and their origins in African itself have an equally strong presence. The articles that make up Africana cover subjects ranging from affirmative action to zydeco and span over four million years from the earlies-known hominids, to Sean "Diddy" Combs. With entries ranging from the African ethnic groups to members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Africana, Second Edition, conveys the history and scope of cultural expression of people of African descent with unprecedented depth.

From the Introduction: Studies have repeatedly shown that children's collections in U.S. school and public libraries contain primarily biased, dated, and inaccurate materials of Africa. Africa Access is responding to the need for quality materials by publishing Afrophile, a bibliography of recommended materials on Africa for children, young people, parents and teachers. The first edition of Afrophile was published in 1992. It listed approximately two hundred and seventy titles. The 1994 edition lists over four hundred-fifty titles. Most of these materials are available for purchase. Some useful but out-of-print titles are also listed. These popular titles are usually available at local school, university, or public libraries. The previous edition of Afrophile listed only those titles published or distributed in the U.S. This edition has been expanded to include titles available abroad, primarily through African Books Collective, a company in England that represents African publishers. Additional features in this edition include author, title, and grade indexes. A list of publishers with addresses is also provided. Only those materials receiving favorable recommendations from scholars on Africa were chosen for inclusion in Afrophile. These titles were drawn from: (1) original reviews submitted to Africa Access by scholars, (2) reviews appearing in scholarly journals and books that focus on Africa, (3) personal recommendations by African Studies professors, and (4) lists of recommended titles from African Studies Programs, particularly Title VI African Studies Outreach Programs at major universities. Print materials constitute the bulk of titles in this edition of Afrophile. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author. Sears List of Subject Headings is the primary source for the subject headings used in Afrophile. Additional Africa-specific descriptors were developed. Discussions by African librarians provided guidance in this area.

While much critical attention has been given to adult literature, African literature for children and young adults remains a neglected area. As the United States becomes an increasingly pluralistic society, it becomes all the more important for children and young adults to be exposed to books set in Africa. This bibliography includes entries for nearly 700 books written in English by both African and Western authors and published between 1873 and 1994. An additional 120 books are either discussed or mentioned in the annotations. The entries are organized in six chapters. The first chapter includes general works, while the others are devoted to particular geographic regions. Within each chapter, entries are further grouped according to genres, such as traditional literature, biography, poetry, drama, fiction, autobiography, and informational books. Entries are then listed alphabetically. Each entry includes an annotation that provides a plot/content summary, thematic analysis, literary evaluation, and sensitivity to multicultural and international issues; an indication of the recommended grade level for the book is included. The books are carefully selected to give fair representation to the various regions and countries of Africa, literary genres, prominent authors and books, and literary phases; the author has tried to include all available books published in the 1980s and 1990s. The introductory essay provides an in-depth analysis of the social, political, cultural, and literary contexts of the three phases of African children's literature: colonial, postcolonial Western, and postcolonial African. This bibliography is intended for scholars, teachers, librarians, parents, students, and general readers.

Most children in Africa start working from a very early age, helping the family or earning wages. Should this work be abolished, tolerated, or encouraged? Such questions are the subject of much debate. International and national organizations, employers, parents, and children often have diverse opinions and put pressure in different directions. The contributions in this book offer intensive fieldwork and careful analysis of children's activities, considering childhood and family, work and play, work in rural and urban contexts, paths to learning, work and school, and children's rights. Representing Africa in Children’s Literature explores how African and Western authors portray youth in contemporary African societies, critically examining the dominant images of Africa and Africans in books published between 1960 and 2005. The book focuses on contemporary children’s and young adult literature set in Africa, examining issues regarding colonialism, the politics of representation, and the challenges posed to both "insiders" and "outsiders" writing about Africa for children.
