Apenas conoció a su padre, que murió en un trágico accidente cuando ella sólo tenía tres años. La tarea de criarla recayó en su abuela y su madre, que estuvieron más que a la altura. La abuela Eboyie, sin educación formal, se empeñó en preparar a su nieta para la vida, inculcándole disciplina, respeto al trabajo y a los demás, independencia, capacidad de gestión y astucia en la calle. A pesar de que el padre de Theresa era una persona con medios razonables y muy apreciada en el pueblo, la abuela optó por formarla mediante la escuela de los golpes duros, sin privilegios. Cuando Theresa se marchó de casa para ir al internado y al instituto en una ciudad lejana, estaba bien equipada para construir una base rme con conocimientos de libros a través de la educación formal. Habiendo sido testigo, al crecer, de la difícil situación de la gente de su zona que tenía pocos medios, especialmente en lo que respecta a la atención sanitaria, soñaba con convertirse en médico para poder aliviar a su gente. De hecho, ella misma tuvo unas circunstancias de nacimiento muy difíciles. Desgraciadamente, por mucho que lo intentara, no pudo acceder a la facultad de medicina en el primer intento. Se conformó con su segunda opción en la universidad. En el último año de la universidad, su vida dio un giro importante. Se casó con un caballero que había recibido una beca para estudiar en Estados Unidos. Tal vez, el sueño se haría realidad después de todo, pensó. Pero no tan rápido, se presentaban numerosos obstáculos en el camino. Se vio obligada a seguir otro camino educativo alternativo. Compaginó los rigurosos programas de posgrado con la maternidad, además de trabajar para atender las necesidades de la familia. Finalmente, la oportunidad de estudiar medicina llegó tras más de una década de espera. Para entonces, tenía 40 años. Pero esa era la parte fácil. Tuvo que combinar el riguroso trabajo de la facultad de medicina con la crianza de cuatro hijos en condiciones muy difíciles. Al nal, Theresa perseveró y triunfó hasta convertirse en una doctora en obstetricia y ginecología cualicada. Después llegó otra serie de retos, esta vez de índole sanitaria, que la han obligado a considerar la posibilidad de interrumpir su carrera médica después de menos de 15 años. Theresa se hizo en África, donde recibió su naturaleza y su crianza. Lo hizo en Estados Unidos, utilizando su rigurosa preparación para aprovechar las oportunidades que se le ofrecían. Es un ejemplo estelar de cómo los sueños se hacen realidad, si no perdemos la esperanza.
