Se conformó con su segunda opción en la universidad. En el último año de la universidad, su vida dio un giro importante. Se casó con un caballero que había recibido una beca para estudiar en Estados Unidos. Tal vez, el sueño se haría realidad después de todo, pensó. Pero no tan rápido, se presentaban numerosos obstáculos en el camino. Se vio obligada a seguir otro camino educativo alternativo. Compaginó los rigurosos programas de posgrado con la maternidad, además de trabajar para atender las necesidades de la familia. Finalmente, la oportunidad de estudiar medicina llegó tras más de una década de espera. Para entonces, tenía 40 años. Pero esa era la parte fácil. Tuvo que combinar el riguroso trabajo de la facultad de medicina con la crianza de cuatro hijos en condiciones muy difíciles. Al nal, Theresa perseveró y triunfó hasta convertirse en una doctora en obstetricia y ginecología cualicada. Después llegó otra serie de retos, esta vez de índole sanitaria, que la han obligado a considerar la posibilidad de interrumpir su carrera médica después de menos de 15 años. Theresa se hizo en África, donde recibió su naturaleza y su crianza. Lo hizo en Estados Unidos, utilizando su rigurosa preparación para aprovechar las oportunidades que se le ofrecían. After about twenty years, the dream came true. Along the way, she married, raised four wonderful children, and earned an MS, PhD, and finally an MD at a ripe age of forty four. She is now equipped to go back to help improve women's health in Ghana. America is truly a land of opportunity, but one must be willing to pay the price to take advantage of it. Theresa was truly made in Africa and she made it in America-literally through blood, sweat, and tears-all by trusting God!

The role of industry in low income countries is important. Industry is good for growth, job creation, and poverty reduction. All of these factors depend on the size and the rate of growth of industry. Africa doesn’t have enough industry to reach the Sustainable Development Goals for growth, job creation, and poverty reduction. Africa’s share of global manufacturing has fallen from about three percent in 1970 to less than two percent in 2010. Why is there so little industry in Africa? Made in Africa: Learning to Compete in Industry outlines a new industrialization strategy to help Africa compete in global markets. This book draws on case study and qualitative research from Africa and emerging Asia to understand what drives firm-level productivity in low income countries. The results show that while traditional concerns such as infrastructure, skills, and the regulatory environment are important, they alone will not be sufficient for Africa to industrialize. The book also addresses how industrialization strategies willneed to adapt to the region’s growing resource abundance.

Tracing the reciprocal relationship between Africa and North America from the seventeenth-century slave trade onwards, two leading authorities in the field provide a major revision to traditional colonial African history as well as to US history. Departing from prior accounts that tended to emphasise only the role of the colonial metropoles in developing Africa, the authors show how American pioneers - missionaries, traders, prospectors, miners, engineers, scientists, and others - have helped to shape Africa. They also point to the equally important impact made by Africa on the United States through trade and immigration, and through the influence of Africans on the arts and agriculture, among other facets of American life. This book examines the potential statehood status of Black Americans in a post Obama period. It presents the condition that Black Americans find themselves from an engineering scientist perspective. Plausible alternative solutions for Black Americans are carefully critiqued with a rational narrowing process. A new option is put on the table that has to do with founding of a new organization known as International African American Workforce. This initiative, IAAW, represents an American workforce made up largely of Black Americans that have nation building skills conducive to engaging in large industrial projects. The IAAW Administration translates need of select African countries into an Industrial upgrade-for-Land project. Types of Industrial upgrades the company would administer in host African countries include: 1. Vocational Institutes 2. Manufacturing and assembly plant upgrades 3. Advanced Irrigation Systems 4. Process Plant Upgrades 5. Middle school to High school Upgrades 6. Electrical Power grid Upgrades African countries motivated to be a global competitor in the world economies of tomorrow stand to benefit from projects led by IAAW organization in Africa. These Black Americans, part of a group of 144,000, would bring a host of technical skills and know how to the country. Black Americans and a mix of other races in America are encouraged to join IAAW as the effects of Covid 19 and social racism cause further tension almost to the brinks of war.

With a booming economy that afforded numerous opportunities for immigrants throughout the 1990s, the Twin Cities area has attracted people of African descent from throughout the United States and the world and is fast becoming a transnational metropolis. Minnesota's largest urban area, the region now also has the country's most diverse black population. A closely drawn ethnography, Creating Africa in America: Translocal Identity in an Emerging World City seeks to understand and evaluate the process of identity formation in the context of globalization in a way that is also site specific. Bringing to this study a rich and interesting professional history and expertise, Jacqueline Copeland-Carson focuses on a Minneapolis-based nonprofit, the Cultural Wellness Center, which combines different ethnic approaches to bodily health and community well-being as the basis for a shared, translocal "African" culture. The book explores how the body can become a surrogate locus for identity, thus displacing territory as the key referent for organizing and experiencing African diasporan diversity. Showing how alternatives are created to mainstream majority and Afrocentric approaches to identity, she addresses the way that bridges can be built in the African diaspora among different African immigrant, African American, and other groups. As this thoughtful and compassionate ethnographic study shows, the fact that there is no simple and concrete way to define how one can be African in contemporary America reflects the tangled nature of cultural processes and social relations at large. Copeland-Carson demonstrates the cultural creativity and social dexterity of people living in an urban setting, and suggests that anthropologists give more attention to the role of the nonprofit sector as a forum for creating community and identity throughout African diasporan history in the United States.

According to accepted historical wisdom, the goal of the African Colonization Society (ACS), founded in 1816 to return freed slaves to Africa, was borne of desperation and illustrated just how intractable the problems of race and slavery had become in the nineteenth-century United States. But for Brandon Mills, the ACS was part of a much wider pattern of national and international expansion. Similar efforts on the part of the young nation to create, in Thomas Jefferson's words, an "empire of liberty," spanned Native removal, the annexation of Texas and California, filibustering campaigns in Latin America, and American missionary efforts in Hawaii, as well as the founding of Liberia in 1821. Mills contends that these diverse currents of U.S. expansionism were ideologically linked and together comprised a capacious colonization movement that both reflected and shaped a wide range of debates over race, settlement, citizenship, and empire in the early republic. The World Colonization Made chronicles the rise and fall of the colonization movement as a political force within the United States—from its roots in the crises of the Revolutionary era, to its peak with the creation of the ACS, to its ultimate decline with emancipation and the Civil War. The book interrogates broader issues of U.S. expansion, including the progression of federal Indian policy, the foundations and effects of the Monroe Doctrine and Manifest Destiny, and the growth of U.S. commercial and military power throughout the Western hemisphere. By contextualizing the colonization movement in this way, Mills shows how it enabled Americans to envision a world of self-governing republics that harmonized with racial politics at home.
