In the last year there have been new books that look critically at the rise of political correctness on US college campuses. These books include Laura Kipnis's Unwanted Advances: Sexual Paranoia Comes to Campus, Nadine Strossen's Hate: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship, Keith Whittington's Speak Freely: Why Universities Must Defend Free Speech, Greg Lukianoff's and Jonathan Haidt's The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure, and Erwin Chemerinsky's and Howard Gillman's Free Speech on Campus. However, what distinguishes Against Inclusion from these is that I focus on the goal of political correctness, which is supposedly achieving diversity and inclusion. I contend that this goal is both dysfunctional and dangerous. Rather than promoting diversity and inclusion, I contend that political correctness trivializes and destroys human diversity for the sake of preserving rather than disrupting the status quo. In this regard, Against Inclusion makes an important contribution to discussions about diversity, language, and multiculturalism policy. Indeed, no other book that looks critically at the goals of political correctness. We simply assume, when criticizing political correctness, that the path to the goal is what is the problem. I contend that the goal is ultimately the problem.

Recent work at the intersection of moral philosophy and the philosophy of psychology has dealt mostly with Aristotelian virtue ethics. The dearth of scholarship that engages with Hume’s moral philosophy, however, is both noticeable and peculiar. Hume's Moral Philosophy and Contemporary Psychology demonstrates how Hume’s moral philosophy comports with recent work from the empirical sciences and moral psychology. It shows how contemporary work in virtue ethics has much stronger similarities to the metaphysically thin conception of human nature that Hume developed, rather than the metaphysically thick conception of human nature that Aristotle espoused. It also reveals how contemporary work in moral motivation and moral epistemology has strong affinities with themes in Hume’s sympathetic sentimentalism.

As societies become more diverse, so too must they become more inclusive. In inclusive societies, all members, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, socio-economic status, ability or disability are valued and free to participate, and there is equity of access and reward. Schools have a powerful role to play in creating inclusive societies, and this begins with the notion of inclusive schools - schools were all children belong, where all children have a place, and where difference is a natural part of what it is to be a human being. Based on this understanding, many countries around the world are moving towards more inclusive education systems. However, working against inclusive education are forces of exclusion – factors that act to exclude and marginalize minority students from participation and learning at school. Therefore, in order to progress the principles and practices of inclusive education, an examination of the construct of exclusion is critical. Important questions to be interrogated if inclusive education is to be a reality are: What is exclusion? Why does it occur? How can it be reduced and eliminated? This book critically examines the construct of exclusion, exploring how disabled students experience exclusion both from and within school and suggesting reasons why this occurs.
