President Bush has made the war against drugs the number one issue on the contemporary American political agenda. In this revised edition of his classic book, available for the first time in paperback, Edward Jay Epstein argues that the president has adopted the strategy of his forebear, Richard Nixon, in using the drugs war to blame foreigners for the crisis in America’s cities, and to provide a smokescreen for unrelated political activity designed to bolster executive power. The drugs crackdown has seen an almost hundredfold increase in the federal budget for narco-politics in the fifteen years since Agency of Fear was first published, while statistics on drug-running have been massaged. Epstein points out that, despite the massive budgets and public relations brouhaha, drug importation, as measured against wholesale price, has in fact grown.

Horror games and movies share many similarities when it comes to how they elicit fear. However, a major difference between the two is the aspect of agency found prominently in games, but little, if at all, in movies. Agency is the capacity to act upon something. Previous work suggests that media with more agency have a greater propensity for eliciting fear than media without. However, this work relied solely on watch (i.e., low agency) versus play (i.e., high agency) comparisons. In this work, an agency manipulation with three separate agency conditions (low-agency watch, medium-agency directed play, and high-agency undirected play) is used in a horror video game. Results of the study show no measured difference in fear, agency, or other metrics where differences were expected. Correlational analyses revealed positive correlations between several factors, but not fear and agency. Potential reasons for the lack of differences are discussed, including the need for the study design to be conducted remotely instead of in a controlled laboratory setup due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This work brings into question the role of agency and fear in uncontrolled and possibly more ecologically valid scenarios.

Continued public outcries over such issues as young models in sexually suggestive ads and intimate relationships between teachers and students speak to one of the most controversial fears of our time: the entanglement of children and sexuality. In this book, Steven Angelides confronts that fear, exploring how emotional vocabularies of anxiety, shame, and even contempt not only dominate discussions of youth sexuality but also allow adults to avoid acknowledging the sexual agency of young people. Introducing case studies and trends from Australia, the United Kingdom, and North America, he challenges assumptions on a variety of topics, including sex education, age-of-consent laws, and sexting. Angelides contends that an unwillingness to recognize children’s sexual agency results not in the protection of young people but in their marginalization.

Belief in supernatural agents is found across societies, and is expressed in religion, folklore, and cultural practices. Scholars have posited that belief in supernatural agents involves activation of psychological mechanisms devoted to the perception of agency, and a few studies have investigated whether supernatural belief is related to agency-detection. Given recurrent ancestral risk of predation and frequent contact with other dangerous animals, hyperactive mechanisms for agency-detection may have spread via the process of natural selection over human evolutionary history. However, hyperactive agency-detection may inadvertently lead to frequent false detection of agency, and belief in supernatural agents as a byproduct. Using a virtual reality (VR) paradigm, I investigated whether false detection of agency is related to belief in supernatural agents. Results indicated that agency-detection was not related to belief in supernatural agents, but was instead related to other dimensions of supernatural belief. Discussion considers the role of compensatory control on supernatural belief, the role of cultural transmission in supernatural belief, and applications of VR as a methodological tool in research.

Empire Of Conspiracy written by Timothy Melley and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-01 with Social Science categories.

Why, Timothy Melley asks, have paranoia and conspiracy theory become such prominent features of postwar American culture? In Empire of Conspiracy, Melley explores the recent growth of anxieties about thought-control, assassination, political indoctrination, stalking, surveillance, and corporate and government plots. At the heart of these developments, he believes, lies a widespread sense of crisis in the way Americans think about human autonomy and individuality. Nothing reveals this crisis more than the remarkably consistent form of expression that Melley calls "agency panic"—an intense fear that individuals can be shaped or controlled by powerful external forces. Drawing on a broad range of forms that manifest this fear—including fiction, film, television, sociology, political writing, self-help literature, and cultural theory—Melley provides a new understanding of the relation between postwar American literature, popular culture, and cultural theory. Empire of Conspiracy offers insightful new readings of texts ranging from Joseph Heller's Catch-22 to the Unabomber Manifesto, from Vance Packard's Hidden Persuaders to recent addiction discourse, and from the "stalker" novels of Margaret Atwood and Diane Johnson to the conspiracy fictions of Thomas Pynchon, William Burroughs, Don DeLillo, and Kathy Acker. Throughout, Melley finds recurrent anxieties about the power of large organizations to control human beings. These fears, he contends, indicate the continuing appeal of a form of individualism that is no longer wholly accurate or useful, but that still underpins a national fantasy of freedom from social control.

“A powerful argument, swept along by Katznelson’s robust prose and the imposing scholarship that lies behind it.”—Kevin Boyle, New York Times Book Review A work that “deeply reconceptualizes the New Deal and raises countless provocative questions” (David Kennedy), Fear Itself changes the ground rules for our understanding of this pivotal era in American history. Ira Katznelson examines the New Deal through the lens of a pervasive, almost existential fear that gripped a world defined by the collapse of capitalism and the rise of competing dictatorships, as well as a fear created by the ruinous racial divisions in American society. Katznelson argues that American democracy was both saved and distorted by a Faustian collaboration that guarded racial segregation as it built a new national state to manage capitalism and assert global power. Fear Itself charts the creation of the modern American state and “how a belief in the common good gave way to a central government dominated by interest-group politics and obsessed with national security” (Louis Menand, The New Yorker).
