"Supply Chain Event Management (SCEM)" is one of the major topics in application-oriented Supply Chain Management. However, many solutions lack conceptual precision and currently available client-server SCEM-systems are ill-suited for complex supply networks in today's business environment. Agent-based proactive information logistics promises to overcome existing deficits by providing event-related information to all participants in the distributed environment. Hence, follow-up costs of disruptive events are significantly reduced for all network participants and performance of a supply network is increased. In this book a thorough analysis of the event management problem domain is the starting point to develop a generic agent-based approach to Supply Network Event Management. The main focus lies on practical issues of event management (e.g., semantic interoperability) and economic benefits to be achieved with agent technology in this state-of-the-art problem domain.

An extensive review of the current literature on supply chain management research shows that, traditionally, a supply chain is typically viewed as a hierarchical structure in which the information and materials flow in a vertical point-to-point fashion and each individual at a level is independent and does not interact with others horizontally. The methodologies often found are mathematical deduction or induction with, sometimes, numerical simulation or empirical data analysis to support the theories. These traditional approaches are very powerful and efficient in solving many problems. However, they are inadequate in the areas that the agent based modeling is capable of. These areas include capturing emergent phenomena; providing a natural description of a supply chain system; and being flexible (scalable and adaptive). This dissertation investigates the supply chain system in a way different from the traditional approaches. Our view of a supply chain is a hierarchical structure with horizontal layers, in which exist interactions between the members (retailers, in our case, who exchange information and stocks). We no longer treat the system as point-to-point, but point-to-layer relationships. We use the agent based modeling to represent in a more natural way the individual interactive entities in the supply chain system and investigate the emergence due to the interactions between these entities. In this dissertation we have demonstrated that interactions between retailers have plausible consequences on the supply chain performance. In particular, we look at the total average costs at the supplier side and find significant improvement in cost reduction as the interactions among the retailers increase. Through the external validation, we confirm that the new agent based modeling method produces the exact results as those from the previous research with traditional approaches. We use agents to represent the firms in the supply chain and program the behaviors for each agent by applying the existing mathematically proved functions. We also use the agents to demonstrate the bullwhip effect. We have shown that without information sharing, the supplier needs to periodically update the mean and variance of demand based on observed demand data through orders received from retailers, then the variance of the orders placed by the supplier will be greater than that by the retailer and in turn the demand. More importantly, providing sufficient information of the underlying demand to the supplier can significantly reduce this increase in variability.

The production industry has to control the material flow from suppliers to customers; the supply chain is the name for the network that performs these activities, and the enterprises have to consider it as a key issue that must be continuously improved. This master's thesis studies how the disturbances in a factory affect the supply chain. To do this, first a supply chain model is built using an agent-based modelling software, and a set of experiments has been designed and executed to validate its general behaviour. Later, disturbances in factory have been modelled, and a new set of experiments has been developed to study how the system behaves under these different disturbances. The disturbances in the factory have impact on the whole supply chain and the results are dependent on the forecasting system used by the agents. Two different types of forecast have been used: Agent-based and centralized forecast. Because of bullwhip effect, the use of the agent-based forecast leads to a higher total cost, and higher stock levels. After the disturbances, the factory needs a noticeable longer time to recover than the other agents in the supply chain.

This book includes many cases that provide new perspectives in developing agent-based modeling and simulation. The real problems are complex, and sophisticated methodology is needed to handle them. Agent-based modeling and simulation is one methodology that provides a bottom-up experimental approach applicable to social sciences such as economics, management, sociology, and politics as well as some engineering fields dealing with social activities. However, to improve the applicability of agent-based modeling and simulation methods, a new perspective is needed. In this book, that new perspective is developed and utilized to deal with many cases of real-world problems such as the supply chain, land use and land cover, transportation, health, services, economics, and social problems. The cases are selected from papers presented at the Ninth International Workshop on Agent-Based Approaches in Economic and Social Complex Systems held in Bali, Indonesia, in 2015. At the workshop, 29 reviewed full papers were presented, and of those, 16 were selected to be included in this volume.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "An Agent-Based Negotiation Framework for Supply Chain Management" Submitted by David, Chun-Wai LEUNG for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2003 In supply chain management, negotiations usually take place between two or more enterprises: a manufacturer may have to negotiate material prices and terms with several upstream suppliers; a wholesaler may have to negotiate with different manufacturers to reserve their manufacturing capabilities; or a retailer may have to negotiate with individual logistics channels for better transportation and value-added services. Traditionally, these negotiation processes have been handled manually, which can sometimes result in inefficiency and human error. This thesis studies the buyer-seller negotiations which take place in a supply chain. The negotiating issue, which is based on a real case study, is orientated from a supplier selection problem between a manufacturer and multiple suppliers. The main reason for choosing this problem is because, in general, purchased costs account for 50% - 90% of total production costs. Although most enterprises have now implemented a Management Information System (MIS) such as an Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) system, these systems seldom cater for advanced supply chain features such as automated negotiation between enterprises. Advances in information technology now make it possible to design some novel approaches which can enhance the ability of thesis systems to deal with supply chain management. This study presents an agent-based negotiation framework which contains a negotiation protocol, two types of agents (buyer agent and supplier agents), and their corresponding negotiation strategies. The negotiation protocol, which extends from the Contract Net Protocol, divides the negotiation process into a series of steps. The buyer agent and supplier agents, representing the buyer and sellers in the supply chain, bargain in an order-bidding process. Their negotiation strategies ensure that the agents bargain in their own interest, and guide them to reach a final agreement. Bid selection is based on the three most important factors for supplier selection - price, quality and delivery. Based on a practical case, the framework was implemented in the Internet environment via the TCP/IP. Simulation results indicate that the proposed framework can improve manufacturer-supplier negotiations in several respects: (1) negotiation time required for seeking an outbid; (2) outbidding successful rate; and (3) reduction in aggregate cost. More generally, the novel agent-based approach can improve enterprise-to-enterprise negotiations in supply chain management. It can also be used alongside the traditional information systems and enhance their supply chain capability. The last mile logistics refers to the last leg of delivery in a supply-chain transportation network. More transporters and delivery runs are required to fulfil this demand and hence make the last-mile logistic a highly inefficient and time-consuming segment of a supply chain. In this thesis, the formulation of the last mile logistics problem has been presented as an optimization problem and is solved by a modified meta-heuristic algorithm and an agent-based simulation technique. For the last-mile logistics problem, the widely studied vehicle routing problem with time windows transportation model was considered, as it abstracts the salient features of numerous logistics and transportation related real-world problems. The ant colony metaheuristic was then modified to find global minimum in case of the last mile problem. In this work, the last mile logistics problem was then also solved as an agent-based simulation model. Due to its efficient behavioral and communicative patterns, the agent-based systems provide a powerful alternative to traditional optimization techniques. In this work, we present a formulation of the last mile logistics problem as an ant colony metaheuristic and as a multi-agent optimization model. The modified ant colony algorithm was experimented on test problems and data, and successful results were obtained. A detailed experimental assessment of the agent based simulation model and our modified ant colony metaheuristic is presented, including the comparison to the traditional centralized algorithms. A detailed analysis of the solution approach is performed as well, generating future research opportunities. The outcomes of this thesis demonstrate that the methodologies return the best-known solutions accomplished by the state-of-the-art algorithms in most of our experimental cases, representing a significant improvement over the previous comparable agent based or metaheuristic studies. The core commitment of this thesis is the more profound and novel understanding of the implications of embracing agent-based and a heuristic approach to solve the last mile network problems and complex transportation-optimization problems.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A Life-cycle-oriented Negotiation Framework for Supply Chain Management: An Agent-based Approach with Hybrid Learning Submitted by Fang Fang for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong August 2007 This thesis presents a new and original agent-based approach to support buyer- seller negotiations in supply chain management (SCM). In SCM applications, supply chain partners usually interact to negotiate on the supply and demand of a product or service. This kind of negotiation is broadly regarded as buyer-seller negotiation. In recent years, enormous research effort has been spent on the development of multi- agent systems (MAS) to automate buyer-seller negotiations. One main shortcoming of these agent-based negotiation systems is that they only consider the direct bargaining process; activities in the pre-negotiation and post-negotiation stages are usually ignored. From the perspective of a life cycle, negotiation is not a single-stage activity but a continuous process, which occurs not only during the actual bargaining process, but also at the pre-negotiation and post-negotiation phases. In this thesis, a MAS with hybrid learning is proposed for the development of a negotiation framework for SCM. Firstly, a life-cycle-oriented negotiation model (LCONM) is established to capture the key elements involved in an entire negotiation life cycle. LCONM adopts the three-phase negotiation life cycle which comprises the pre-bargaining, bargaining and post-bargaining phases. Based on this model, the MAS called LCOABN (life-cycle-oriented agent- based negotiation) has been developed. Considering the characteristics of the buyer- seller negotiation in a supply chain, LCOABN supports one-to-many, time- constrained, multi-round, and multi-issue negotiations. It comprises a number of function agents. Mobile agents are dispatched to sellers' hosts to represent the buyer to bargain with the sellers locally. As inherited from LCONM, important aspects including the three-phase negotiation life cycle and negotiation experience are supported in LCOABN. The negotiation activities in LCOABN are categorized into offline and online negotiation activities. Offline activities deal with the preparation works before the bargaining phase and the subsequent evaluation works to enable agents to elicit valuable negotiation knowledge that might help them to achieve a better outcome. A hybrid learning approach (including case-based reasoning, artificial neural network, and partial swarm optimization) has been established to realize these offline activities. Online activities deal with the formal interactions between the seller and buyer mobile agents. A negotiation protocol and various negotiation strategies have also been developed and implemented. The negotiation protocol is an enhanced version of the contract net protocol (CNP). It supports multilateral negotiations and agent interactions involving mobile agents. The private negotiation strategies of the agents ensure that they bargain in their own interests to achieve a promising outcome. Bid selection is based on the five most issues (price, delivery, service, quantity and performance of the sellers). MAUT-based and ANN-based utility functions are used to model the linear and nonlinear relationships among these issues respectively. Experimental results show tha
