O objetivo central deste trabalho é analisar a reprodução social da agricultura familiar pelo estudo da interrelação entre família e trabalho em cinco famílias agricultoras no Nordeste Paraense. Foi realizado um estudo de caso utilizando a abordagem qualitativa, onde os principais instrumentos metodológicos foram entrevistas, questionários e observações. As categorias centrais de análise são agricultura familiar, família e trabalho. As conclusões mostram que os agricultores do estudo tiveram acesso às suas terras de formas bem diversificadas: herança - com a partilha ou sem partilha da terra; regularização fundiária - através da criação de um assentamento da reforma agrária e; transações comerciais - direta, através da compra ou indireta, por troca. A principal atividade produtiva é a roça de mandioca para a produção de farinha, mas são encontradas também roças de milho e de feijão, Sistemas Agro-florestais, extrativismo e criação de gado bovino. A organização e realização do trabalho nos grupos estudados estão amparadas principalmente nas relações de parentesco, sendo os membros da família nuclear quem realizam quase a totalidade das atividades, que são distribuídas em três espaços: a casa predominantemente feminina; a roça - prioritariamente masculina e; o retiro - local de trabalho de toda a família. Entre os grupos existem diferentes arranjos, mas prevalece uma divisão social do trabalho embasada em diferenças de sexo e geração, amparada nas diferenças de sexo e idade segundo a noção de serviço "leve"--Passível de ser realizado por mulheres e crianças - e "pesado"--realizado exclusivamente pelos homens. Mas o que se verificou foi que tanto a noção da divisão rígida de trabalho na casa e na roça, quanto as noções de "leve" e "pesado" não se confirmam no dia-a-dia de trabalho. Enfim, os grupos domésticos estudados vivem de seu trabalho na terra, de forma que esta representa para eles efetivamente o local de morada e de trabalho.

A pesquisa foi feita com o objetivo de identificar e analisar as necessidades, demandas e usos de informação por agricultores parceiros do projeto de pesquisa "Adaptação e validação participativa de uma alternativa tecnológica de preparo de área sem queima no nordeste paraense", desenvolvido nos municípios de Igarapé -Açu e Marapanim, pela Embrapa, no processo de comunicação e de informação para ação. Com base em entrevistas e observação foi traçado o perfil dos agricultores parceiros, agricultores vizinhos e formadores de opinião e identificadas as suas demandas de informação, sendo a mais significativa relacionada à Agricultura (cultivo, doenças, pragas, financiamento I crédito agrícola), seguida de informações sobre Educação, Previdência Social, Direito etc. O conceito de informação foi construído a partir de percepções dos entrevistados e foram estudados, ainda, ações participativas promovidas pelo projeto, meios de comunicação de massa de maior audiência, além de estímulos e barreiras na informação. Entre os atores sociais e institucionais atuantes no processo há forte participação dos familiares e agricultores vizinhos, como fonte de informação para as comunidades e, entre as diversas instituições, a Embrapa. Através da aplicação da técnica do incidente crítico foi analisada a busca de informação mais recente, quando agricultores parceiros precisaram de informação para desenvolver suas atividades, se a obtiveram ou não, e o que isso ocasionou nas suas atividades na agricultura familiar e nas suas vidas.

Over the past decade, the Brazilian government has actively promoted oil palm in the Amazon biome as an alternative biodiesel feedstock to soy. Because of oil palms comparatively high productivity, it places less demand on land than soy and could thereby contribute to reducing pressure on the Amazonian forest. Although oil palm has long been a leading driver of deforestation and social conflict in major producer countries in Southeast Asia, the Brazilian government has put in place a number of mechanisms to ensure oil palm is cultivated sustainably and the sector is inclusive of the rural poor. Through research conducted in Brazils leading palm oil producing state of Pará, this paper analyzes the evolution and dynamics of the Brazilian palm oil value chain and the economic, environmental and social challenges faced by the sector. In so doing, it shows that under the right institutional and regulatory conditions, the palm oil sector can expand sustainably and inclusively within forested ecosystems. This though translates into considerably higher production costs for producers, thus undermining the international competitiveness of the Brazilian palm oil sector.

A floresta amazônica chegou ao ano de 2020 marcada pela tragédia. Desde o malfadado "dia do fogo" (10 de agosto de 2019), apresentado de forma bizarra como manifestação de apoio a um presidente descompromissado com a preservação desse bioma, milhares de hectares de mata queimaram continuamente, dia após dia. As consequências ainda estão se fazendo sentir. As perdas em biodiversidade são difíceis de calcular, mas certamente afetam os ecossistemas e os meios de vida das populações rurais e ribeirinhas. Os impactos sociais e ambientais são denunciados diuturnamente em todo o mundo, de maneira inútil. A sociedade brasileira manteve-se (não apenas sobre esse tema) estranhamente impassível, ainda confusa e dividida desde a última campanha eleitoral dominada por desinformação e irracionalidade. Já a opinião pública internacional, movida pelo volume de informações que circulou nos veículos de notícias e nas redes sociais, pressionou seus governos a tratarem o Brasil com desconfiança. A Amazônia é um desses casos emblemáticos de recrudescimento de uma construção ideológica sobre a primazia de desenvolvimento e a exploração de recursos. Das autoridades públicas e religiosas dos séculos XVI e XVII, passando pelos naturalistas dos séculos XVIII e XIX, chegando aos documentos e aos estudos produzidos no século XX. Impressiona a recorrência da visão edênica sobre a floresta, as impressões sobre o exotismo dos povos indígenas contatados, sobre a exuberância da fauna e da flora. Esse olhar "de fora", que não raro se estende sobre todos os que habitam esses espaços, é um dos pontos centrais desse entendimento exógeno e relacionado ao pensamento político-econômico dominante. Esta obra pretende refletir sobre tendências e legados do passado, examinando diversos aspectos da Amazônia: históricos, antropológicos, sociológicos, legais, culturais, ambientais e geográficos. O conjunto de especialistas acadêmicos aqui reunidos, muitos dos quais moram e trabalham nos estados amazônicos, propôs-se a olhar para esses aspectos e, trazendo-os em seus textos, proporcionar uma aproximação entre esse mundo diverso e os leitores do presente livro. The rapid development of oil palm cultivation feeds many social issues such as biodiversity, deforestation, food habits or ethical investments. How can this palm be viewed as a miracle plant by both the agro-food industry in the North and farmers in the tropical zone, but a serious ecological threat by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for the environment or rights of local indigenous peoples? In the present book the authors – a biologist and an agricultural economist- describe a global and complex tropical sector, for which the interests of the many different stakeholders are often antagonistic. Oil palm has become emblematic of recent changes in North-South relationship in agricultural development. Indeed, palm oil is produced and consumed in the South; its trade is driven by emerging countries, although the major part of its transformations is made in the North that still hosts the largest multinational agro industries. It is also in the North that the sector is challenged on ethical and environmental issues. Public controversy over palm oil is often opinionated and it is fed by definitive and sometimes exaggerated statements. Researchers are conveying a more nuanced speech, which is supported by scientific data and a shared field experience. Their work helps in building a more balanced view, moving attention to the South, the region of exclusive production and major consumption of palm oil.
