La agricultura periurbana está adquiriendo en los últimos tiempos un gran interés analítico y prospectivo en el marco de las renovadas políticas agroalimentarias y de planificación territorial. Para fortalecer su papel de proveedora de alimentos de calidad y proximidad, se requiere un mayor y mejor conocimiento de este tipo peculiar de agricultura a la luz de un marco teórico renovado que dé soporte a la acción pública para garantizar su viabilidad económica y asegurar su carácter multifuncional y su territorialidad. Desde esta perspectiva, el libro aporta un panorama actualizado de la conceptuación de la agricultura periurbana y una revisión profunda de la trayectoria de la ordenación de los espacios agrarios periurbanos en el camino hacia la formulación del denominado proyecto agrourbano. Junto al estudio de determinadas figuras e instrumentos para su gestión y revitalización, como los parques agrarios, el libro aporta una síntesis de la experiencia francesa en la defensa y activación de la agricultura periurbana y el estudio del reciente Plan de la Huerta de Valencia. La obra proporciona también una propuesta metodológica innovadora para caracterizar la agricultura periurbana, aplicada a la región urbana de Madrid, como herramienta para una planificación territorial comprometida.
