Farmers' cooperatives are very prevalent in the European Union, where they account for approximately half of agricultural trade and thus are key to articulating rural realities and in shaping the sustainability credentials of European food and farming. This book analyses to what extent farmers' cooperatives are working to benefit their members, are showing concern for their communities and are promoting cooperative economies. It offers a multilevel set of theoretical, disciplinary, methodological, empirical and social perspectives, using the UK and Spain as contrasting examples, and analyses whether agricultural cooperatives contribute to achieving sustainable food systems. The book presents empirical data from diverse and rich case studies, from large, international cooperatives, to small, multi-stakeholder initiatives. This provides an alternative viewpoint to that of economics, which tends to dominate the study of agricultural cooperatives. The author presents a new theoretical framework that provides a novel lens to study farmers’ cooperatives as organisations deeply embedded in power dynamics of the food system and agricultural policy that shape and constraint their potential to adopt cooperative and sustainable practices. The book is a major addition to the study of agricultural cooperatives and their impact in the development of fairer and more sustainable food systems and it is one of the first detailed accounts of multi-stakeholder food and farming cooperatives in Europe. It is a valuable resource for all scholars working on cooperatives, as well as for students studying agricultural and food policy, environmental justice and rural sociology.

English Abstract: Membership rates of agricultural co-operatives vary widely across member states of the European Union. Inspired by various strands of literature (institutionalism, social capital theory, literature on transition countries and the 'software of the mind'), we investigate historical and social determinants of those differences. We find that social capital and the legacy of communism are significantly correlated with the attractiveness of the co-operative sector for farmers, while the Hofstede indicators, measuring deeply rooted cultural values that otherwise are so robust and have correlations with many entrepreneurial and organizational aspects, are not. We describe our analysis and elaborate on the limits and implications of the data used and methodology applied.

This present publication offers the reader a first complete statistical overview of cooperatives, mutual and non-profit sectors in the European Union. It is the result of pilot survey which began in 1991 covering the 12 member States which formed the European Union at that time. ... The main aim of this publication is to offer a statistical insight into these particular types of economic organisations, which have in common - as unincorporated firms and unlike corporations - that they do not distribute dividends. Figures presented in this publication show the picture of a versatile, dynamic and important sector for its size. ... -- [Preface].

Agricultural cooperative in Europe are experimenting with innovation in internal governance structures. Due to changes in the market environment, but also in business organisation legislation, cooperatives feel the need to adjust their internal governance in order to enhance market orientation, attract high quality managers, strengthen member commitment, and overall reinforce cooperative entrepreneurship. In this paper we present an overview of the different innovations in the internal governance mechanisms that can be found among agricultural cooperatives in the European Union. We present theoretical explanations for these innovations and we discuss their implications for member control and manager accountability, but also for performance and further development of the cooperative.
