In the wake of proliferating discourses around globalisation and culture, some central questions around cultural politics have acquired a commonsensical and hegemonic character in contemporary intellectual discourse. The politics of difference, the possibilities of hybridity and the potential of multiple liminalities frame much discussion around the transnational dimensions of culture and post-identity politics. In this volume, the economic, political and social consequences of the focus on ‘culture’ in contemporary theories of globalization are analysed around the disparate fields of architecture, museum discourse, satellite television, dub poetry, carnival and sub-national theatre. The discourses of hybridity, diaspora, cultural difference minoritization are critically interrogated and engaged with through close analysis of cultural objects and practices. The essays thus intervene in the debate around modernity, globalization and cultural politics, and the volume as a whole provides a critical constellation through which the complexity of transnational culture can be framed. Thinking through the particular, the essays limn the absent universality of forms of capitalist globalization and the volume as a whole provides multiple perspectives from which to enter the singular modernity of our times in all its complexity.

[English]:After centuries of submission to the foreign rulers, between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century the South of Italy took a leading role in the European political landscape, on one hand absorbing in its culture the huge heritage of values and knowledge of those civilizations, on the other hand appealing to its own scientists, intellectuals and technicians’ fervid minds to achieve relevant international goals in the field of the public and urbanistic works. Kings, such as Charles of Bourbon and Ferdinand II, were the main promoters of this ransom and of the achieved primacies. Rummaging through the iconographic documents passed on their desks, nowadays rearranged in the Neapolitan National library Palatine collection and consulting the volumes of the Royal library, it turns out a great turmoil of ideas and projects, but also the confirmation of the large amount of potentialities unfortunately not completely expressed by the Neapolitan State: it occurred, it should be said, not only as a consequence of the end of the kingdom, but also as a result of the specific political responsibility of that dynasty: Unfortunately Italy’s unification didn’t enhance the heritage of these experiences, nor it rectified the structural inadequacies of the former regime; on the contrary the new State often contributed to increase them, stifling a socio-economic promise of development still today unrealized./ [Italiano]: Dopo secoli di sottomissione alle potenze straniere, tra Sette e Ottocento il Mezzogiorno d’Italia assunse un ruolo di grande prestigio nel panorama europeo, da un lato introiettando nella propria cultura il cospicuo patrimonio di valori e conoscenze di quelle civiltà, dall’altro facendo leva sulle fervide menti dei propri scienziati, intellettuali e tecnici per raggiungere traguardi di assoluto rilievo internazionale nel campo delle opere pubbliche e dell’urbanistica. Sovrani come Carlo di Borbone e Ferdinando II furono i principali promotori di questo riscatto e dei primati conseguiti. Frugando tra i documenti iconografici transitati sulla loro scrivania, oggi riordinati nella raccolta Palatina della Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli, e interrogando i volumi della Biblioteca Reale, si scopre un ricco fermento di idee e di progettualità, ma anche la conferma del ricco quadro delle potenzialità purtroppo non pienamente espresse dallo Stato napoletano: ciò, va detto, non soltanto a seguito della fine del Regno, ma anche per le precise responsabilità politiche di quella dinastia. Purtroppo con l’Unità d’Italia tale patrimonio di esperienze non fu valorizzato, né corrette le deficienze strutturali del passato regime; anzi, il nuovo Stato contribuì sovente ad amplificarle, soffocando una promessa di sviluppo socio-economico che resta ancor oggi inattuata.

Zwischen Kunst und Naturwissenschaft existierten zahlreiche Verbindungen in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die Wissenschaft wandte sich zunehmend von deduktiven Methoden ab, und Naturforscher untersuchten in empirischen Studien Naturphänomene vor Ort. Destruktive Naturgewalten wie Erdbeben oder Vulkanausbrüche konfrontierten die Wissenschaftler in besonderer Weise mit dem Problem, wie ihre Beobachtungen und Erkenntnisse anschaulich zu kommunizieren seien. Zahlreiche Forscher erprobten daher neue visuelle Darstellungsverfahren, um die Defizite der rein verbalen Beschreibung auszugleichen. Im Zuge der Aufwertung der unmittelbaren Naturbeobachtung beteiligten sich auch Künstler selbst an der Erforschung der Natur und entwickelten unterschiedliche Strategien der visuellen Aneignung von bedrohlichen Naturphänomenen. Diese können ohne Rekurs auf die zeitgenössische Naturwissenschaft nicht angemessen beurteilt werden. In dieser Arbeit wird anhand von ausgewählten Fallbeispielen die Auseinandersetzung mit Naturgewalten um 1800 untersucht, welche durch die Interaktionen von Wissenschaft und Kunst entscheidend geprägt wurde. Vorgestellt werden unterschiedliche Bildmedien, von diagrammatischer wissenschaftlicher Illustration über künstlerische Graphik, anerkannte Landschaftsmalerei bis hin zu den Panoramen. Der mit fortschreitender Naturerkenntnis sich verändernde Blick auf die Natur wird an den bildkünstlerischen Medien festgemacht und dort im Einzelnen näher analysiert. Künstler wie Wissenschaftler setzten sich intensiv mit der Differenz und Interdependenz von Sprache und Bildern auseinander. Voraussetzung dafür war ein zunehmendes Bewusstsein über die spezifischen Qualitäten des Mediums Bild als Erkenntnismodus und Informationsträger.
