Applications in Applied Linguistics departs from a comprehensive concept that views Applied Linguistics as the application of findings, theories and methods of sciences related to issues of language and communication, and that distinguishes different modes of applications (practical vs. theoretical, and top-down, i.e. departing from science, vs. bottom-up, i.e. departing from a real-life problem). These different modes are exemplified by descriptions of different domains of application that often have a far reaching impact on societies and individuals. Narrowing down the range of problems with language and communication from the level of societies to that of groups and individuals, the contributions describe problem areas and applied linguistic ways of dealing with them in the fields of language policy and planning; language and communication in the legal sphere; communication of migrants in diaspora situations; language and communication in the media; and in the study of communication disorders.

This issue engages with contemporary sociological debates on reflexivity, youth, and late modernity. Drawing from the ontological and epistemological lens of linguistic ethnography, the contributors describe different indexical forms of language use (linguistic styles, discourse registers, small narratives, moral stances, metacommentaries and semiotic norms), in the context of their participants' life trajectories with the aim to: (a) offer a fresh view of the linguistic/discursive resources that young people mobilize to make their way through the world; (b) engage with existing knowledge in the social sciences through revisiting well-established constructs in socio-culturally oriented applied linguistics (habitus, social field, structuration, modes of reflexivity, cultural capital and social class), in light of the cultural conditions of late modernity; and (c) suggest some implications for applied researchers and practitioners. The issue presents data collected in US, Singapore, Hong Kong, Spain, Finland or Belgium, and includes research participants from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds.

"She said that he said that they said..." - in this volume of the AILA Review, we investigate linguistic recycling from complementary angles. In particular, we discuss how and for whom language users - both as individuals and as communities - save resources and create value by quoting and recontextualizing others' utterances. The volume introduction develops a systematic framework to analyze the formal, functional, and procedural aspects of linguistic recycling. It is followed by ten papers that investigate practices of linguistic recycling in domains such as language education, academia, and high-tech industries. Trigger questions are meant to stimulate the 2020 debate on linguistic recycling in the AILA Researchers' Forum: https: //aila.info/reserch/debate

This issue of AILA Review contains the proceedings of a special symposium of the AILA Scientific Commission of Second Language Acquisition at the 2005 AILA Congress in Madison, WI, USA. Seven international experts in the field of SLA - Bardovi-Harlig, Dörnyei, N. Ellis, R. Ellis, Gass, Kasper, Mackey - have been asked to provide a state of the art overview of their specialization tracks. The result is a concise summary of six distinct strands of second language acquisition studies that follow both linguistics-based and psychology-based approaches. Readers will not only find up-to-date reviews of important SLA areas but the issue also offers authoritative insights into the thinking of some of the major scholars in the field of applied linguistics.
