The report describes the results of a test to determine the nature of forces transmitted through earth to buried structures from the explosion in air of an atomic bomb. The structures were primarily reinforced concrete boxes having a large number of simply supported steel beam strips forming their roofs. Three structures were included in the program, having respectively 1 ft, 4 ft, and ft of earth cover over the beam strips, and each of the structures had a number of individual beam strips, with several strips of each of three different degrees of flexibility to provide information concerning the effect of flexibility of the structure on the loading transmitted to it. All of the beam strips had the same span, namely 8 ft. The structures were tested in two shots, the first producint an overpressure level of about 15 psi, and the second about 63 psi.

The general purpose of this project was to obtain the necessary basic data from which to develop criteria for the economical and efficient design of underground protection from air-blast forces. The specific objectives were: (1) to investigate the nature of the forces transmitted from an air burst of an atomic device through the earth to underground structures; (2) to determine the variation of these forces with the depth of the structure in the earth and with the flexibility of the structural elements; and (3) to study the response of simple structural elements of different stiffnesses and effective masses subjected to the transmitted dynamic forces.

Project 1.7 of Operation TEAPOT was concerned with the measurement of surface and subsurface effects of an underground explosion of a 1.2-kt nuclear burst (Shot 7). The measurements included free-field earth and airblast effects, as well as loading on underground structural devices. This report deals with the presentation and analysis of the free-field data only; the structural data have been transmitted to the appropriate agencies for their analysis. From the 76 channels installed on TEAPOT Shot 7, 75 usable records were obtained. The free-field quantities measured include air-blast pressure, earth acceleration, earth stress and strain, and permanent earth displacement. The results are discussed by phenomenon and, in each case, the TEAPOT data are compared with pretest predictions. Also, where data are available, comparisons are made with previous underground nuclear test results. Some aspects of seismology and soil mechanics as applied to underground explosion phenomena are presented and, finally, the most pertinent high explosives results from subsequent tests conducted at the TEAPOT location are summarized. The effects of surface blasts on underground structures were studied through centrifuge model tests. Centrifuge scaling relationships make it possible to model the effects of large explosions, using a relatively small quantity of explosives under a high g-level. Centrifuge tests, conducted at 70 g, using 2.6 mg of TNT equivalent of explosives, resulted in explosions equivalent to those using 8.7 kN (0.9 tons) of TNT equivalent under normal (1 g) gravity. Strains induced at different locations of the model structure due to the explosion were measured using strain gages. Results indicated that the strains depend on the thickness and nature of the intervening medium. The presence of a polyurethane geofoam compressible inclusion barrier appeared to mitigate the impact of the explosion. Centrifuge model testing is useful in determining the effectiveness of different design alternatives, in studying the mitigating effects of different barrier systems, and in verifying and calibrating results of numerical models related to explosions and underground structures.

"The overarching goal of the research described in this report is to characterize the effects of detonations of high explosives, inside and in the immediate vicinity of the fireball. A computational fluid dynamics code is verified in 1D and validated in 2D for air blast calculations. The code is used to develop recommendations for modeling the effects of explosions in the near field, to generate new design charts appropriate for near-filed air-blast calculations, and to update design charts for reflection coefficients for peak overpressure and for scaled impulse as a function of angle of incidence. Recommendations are provided for calculating values of erosion strain for finite element analysis of reinforced concrete components subjected to near-field air-blast loadings"--Page iii.
