This military history explores more than a century of aerial submarine hunting, from WWI through the Cold War and beyond. U. S. Navy veteran Michael Glynn served as a submarine hunting pilot. Now he chronicles the evolution of this unique combat role from the Great War through the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II and on to secret Cold War confrontations. He traces the parallel evolution of both aircraft and submarine as each side tries to gain advantage. Through his expert analysis, Glynn distills complicated oceanography, operations analysis, and technical theory, helping the reader understand how complex weapons and sensors function. He also examines submarine hunts in action, showing how theory and practice work together to help aviators detected their targets.

Motion picture photography of representative submarine and nonsubmarine target pips on the PPI scope, and synchronous recording of the audio signals were used to investigate the information displayed by the AN/AQS-10 sonar system for target classification. It was found that the PPI display provides unreliable indications of target shape and orientation under most operating conditions. The PPI information is further degraded by operational problems associated with the range and bearing cursor, the expanded sweep mode, and the dependence of the keying cycle on range scale in use. The audio display provides discriminable doppler, given target speed components (in the sound beam) as low as 2 kts, although its perception is made somewhat difficult by the chordal quality of the audio. Recommendations for improvement of the system are made with particular emphasis on display techniques that would enhance the determinability of target motion. The development of training films from the target data recordings is recommended.

This report summarizes the analysis and algorithm design for the application of adaptive decision aiding methodlogy to airborne ASW operation. The objective focuses on the transition of the ADDAM (Adaptive Decision Aiding Methodology) to the decision functions of the Tactical Coordination Officers (TACCO) in the P3 aircraft. The report reviews the P3 ASW decision environment, describes the mission objectives, analyzes the TACCO decision tasks, and reviews currently available computational and decision aids. Methodology used in submarine tracking are reviewed. Detailed decision analysis of the TACCO decision task is described and mapped into decision theoretic concepts in terms of decision trees, probabilities, and utilities. Algorithms for employing adaptive decision aiding within the TACCO decision task are developed for a set of decisions involving sensor pattern selection and number of sensors per pattern for a given probability distribution of submarine locations. An adaptive utility model is developed together with utility and probability assessment procedures. An implementation plan is described for a demonstration system which will be operated in the real P3 aircraft computer under simulation conditions. (Author).

Forgotten Weapon written by William F. Althoff and has been published by US Naval Institute Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with History categories.

Airships are the forgotten weapon of World War II. Forgotten Weapons analyzes the development of airships as weapons for antisubmarine warfare, examines how scientists and airmen collaborated to combat U-boats and reveals the little-known accomplishments of airship crews. As William F. Althoff demonstrates, the naval airship logged an admirable operational record during the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continued armed contest during the war. Their useful deployment depended first, however, on effective collaboration between naval airmen and government-sponsored research institutions, such as the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC). The Battle of the Atlantic saw a race to gain technological advantage German measures met by Allied counter measures with both sides producing various weapons and sensors designed either to destroy or to protect Allied merchant shipping. For the antisubmarine campaign, U.S. contract laboratories devised the magnetic airborne detector (MAD), microwave radar, the Loran long-range navigation systems, radio sono-buoys, and pattern ordnance, all of which were fitted to airships. Key NDRC projects exploited lighter-than-air platforms for airborne tests. Hurried into production, special devices for antisubmarine warfare were fitted onto fleet airships as well as in airplanes and surface forces. The result turned the tide against the U-boat menace and saved countless lives, supplies, and shipping. This book is an invaluable history and reference for readers interested in airships, antisubmarine warfare, the Battle of the Atlantic, and the bygone squadrons of unique airmen who helped defeat the Nazi war on commerce from 1939 to 1945.
