Situational awareness has become an increasingly salient factor contributing to flight safety and operational performance, and the research has burgeoned to cope with the human performance challenges associated with the installation of advanced avionics systems in modern aircraft. The systematic study and application of situational awareness has also extended beyond the cockpit to include air traffic controllers and personnel operating within other complex, high consequence work domains. This volume offers a collection of essays that have made important contributions to situational awareness research and practice. To this end, it provides unique access to key readings that address the conceptual development of situational awareness, methods for its assessment, and applications to enhance situational awareness through training and design.

The issue of how to support situation awareness among crews of modern commercial aircraft is becoming especially important with the introduction of automation in the form of sophisticated flight management computers and expert systems designed to assist the crew. In this paper, cognitive theories are discussed that have relevance for the definition and measurement of situation awareness. These theories suggest that comprehension of the flow of events is an active process that is limited by the modularity of attention and memory constraints, but can be enhanced by expert knowledge and strategies. Three implications of this perspective for assessing and improving situation awareness are considered: (1) Scenario variations are proposed that tax awareness by placing demands on attention; (2) Experimental tasks and probes are described for assessing the cognitive processes that underlie situation awareness; and (3) The use of computer-based human performance models to augment the measures of situation awareness derived from performance data is explored. Finally, two potential example applications of the proposed assessment techniques are described, one concerning spatial awareness using wide field of view displays and the other emphasizing fault management in aircraft systems. Situation Awareness Analysis and Measurement provides a comprehensive overview of different approaches to the measurement of situation awareness in experimental and applied settings. Creating system designs and training programs to enhance situation awareness is a key goal in the development of systems in such widely ranging fields as aviation, advanced transportation programs, command and control, process control, and medicine. This book directly tackles the problem of ensuring that system designs and training programs are effective at promoting situation awareness. Situation Awareness Analysis and Measurement is the first book to provide a comprehensive coverage of situation awareness and its measurement. Topics addressed provide a detailed analysis of the use of a wide variety of techniques for measuring situation awareness and situation assessment processes. It will provide a rich resource for engineers and human factors psychologists involved in designing and evaluating systems in many domains.

(This is the Color Interior Print Version) In his book, "The All-Attitude Aviator," Karl Schlimm offers indispensable tips and techniques for pilots on how to prevent and recover from aircraft upsets or loss of control. Karl is one of the most experienced Upset Prevention and Recovery Training experts in the world. An upset is a loss of control event involving excessive airplane pitch, bank and airspeed excursions. The fatality rate from such events is very high. Karl has almost 5000 hours and ten years of experience teaching UPRT to commercial, military and private pilots in propeller and jet training aircraft in both the low and high-altitude environment, and has extensive experience teaching UPRT in flight simulators. You won't find some of this information anywhere else. It puts a practical twist on the information on UPRT published by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and industry experts. Karl highlights many of the mistakes his clients have made over the years, as well as important human factors effecting prevention of upsets and safe recovery from them. This book will help any pilot get the most from upset prevention and recovery training. Karl highly recommends at least some on-aircraft UPRT and explains why in this book. The "All-Attitude Aviator" has valuable practical knowledge for aviation industry safety, and human factors experts as well.

Evaluation Of Tactile Situation Awareness System As An Aid For Improving Aircraft Control During Periods Of Impaired Vision written by James S. "This thesis describes the use of a prototype Tactile Situational Awareness System (TSAS) as an approach to aid pilot performance following simulated laser blindness modeled during a virtual approach in an SH-60 helicopter. Situational awareness and spatial awareness remain critical factors for successful control of manned aircraft. Helicopters and fixed winged aircraft pilots react to spatial orientation challenges during take-off, and landing phases of flight. U.S. and NATO aircraft pilot surveys examined the human machine interaction and revealed degraded vision as an important human factor contributing to mishaps or near mishaps. Vision was identified as an information chokepoint limiting command and control of the aircraft. Fortunately, vision can be augmented with an available technology called "haptics" during restricted or limited human vision. Therefore, an experiment using X-Plane output for haptics-generated input from a torso-worn TSAS was developed. Participants received haptic cues during runway approaches after experiencing simulated loss of vision. Participant performance after simulated laser blinding with and without the TSAS compared time advantage and navigation accuracy. Simulator performance data indicated pilots using TSAS following simulated laser blindness responded to haptic cues, had more time to prevent the aircraft from obtaining an unsafe pitch or roll condition, and could position the aircraft closer to the landing zone."--P. v.

This paper addresses situation awareness (SA) as it relates to surveillance activities in commercial air carriers. The concept of SA in aerospace operations and relevant literature are reviewed and critiqued. Four different approaches that are used to explain SA are examined, and the three major SA measurement techniques and their respective subcategories are described. Research that has explored these techniques is reviewed, and the shortcomings of the measures are discussed in terms of relevant psychology measurement criteria (e.g., validity). Several components of SA also are discussed because they appear to relate to surveillance activities. Research related to these components is reviewed, and a summary that focuses on the current state of SA research is provided, along with an evaluation about the future of SA research and applications.
