L'objectif de ce travail était d'éclairer les modalités de construction de l'espace de relations qui a progressivement connecté al-Andalus et le Maghreb aux premiers siècles de l'Islam. Bien qu'il devienne visible sous le règne des Almoravides puis des Almohades (Ve/XIe-VIIe/XIIIe siècle), ce processus d'intégration de l'Occident musulman est en effet plus ancien : l'époque omeyyade (IIe/VIIIe-Ve/XIe siècle) en a été un moment majeur. En premier lieu, le IVe/Xe siècle a en effet été marqué par le développement, à l'initiative du califat de Cordoue, d'un territoire impérial qui s'étendait des Pyrénées jusqu'aux marges septentrionales du Sahara, dont la structure conférait un statut central au détroit de Gibraltar. Ensuite, les échanges commerciaux se sont notablement développés sur l'ensemble de la période, assurant la connexion des littoraux de l'ensemble de la Méditerranée occidentale, y compris de la rive chrétienne : l'analyse des marchandises échangées, de l'or du Soudan aux esclaves blancs, démontre cependant l'insertion de l'Occident musulman dans des ensembles économiques plus vastes. Enfin, les savants ont intensément circulé à l'intérieur de cet espace : leurs déplacements se sont organisés autour de deux axes principaux, entre al-Andalus et le nord du Maghreb occidental, mais aussi entre al-Andalus et l'Ifrīqiya. Certaines des villes qu'ils fréquentèrent alors devinrent progressivement les pôles d'un espace intellectuel partagé, commun aux savants des deux rives.Il a ainsi été possible de reconstituer la structure et le fonctionnement des réseaux d'échanges qui ont mis en contact la péninsule Ibérique et le Maghreb, en particulier leur inscription dans l'espace, le rôle des acteurs qui les ont fait vivre et enfin les flux qu'ils distribuaient à l'échelle de la Méditerranée occidentale. Fondée sur une compréhension plus fine des phénomènes spatiaux et des enjeux territoriaux, cette analyse a donc permis de développer une nouvelle géographie historique de l'Occident musulman des premiers siècles.

Al-Andalus continue de susciter fantasmes, nostalgie et projections de toutes sortes. Tour à tour érigée en haut lieu de la tolérance islamique, en paradis perdu dont ne subsistent que de délicats palais et l’écho lointain d’un art de vivre disparu, mais aussi en théâtre d’une lutte à mort entre Islam et Chrétienté, elle est l’une des rares terres ayant donné naissance à des mythes aussi riches que contradictoires. Ce morceau d’Europe qui fut à l’Islam a heureusement laissé des textes qu’Emmanuelle Tixier du Mesnil se propose de relire, en regardant plus particulièrement la très riche moisson intellectuelle du XIe siècle, lorsqu’une vingtaine de principautés, les royaumes des Taïfas, se partageaient les lambeaux du territoire califal. Ce temps de tous les dangers, alors que menaçaient tant les rois chrétiens du nord de la péninsule que les guerriers berbères du Maghreb, fut celui d’une grande inventivité politique (l’Espagne islamique expérimentait deux cents ans avant l’Orient la disparition du califat), mais aussi celui d’une très belle floraison culturelle. Pouvoir et savoir nouèrent dans ce théâtre d’exception des liens très solides au cours d’un beau XIe siècle dont il faut restituer le déroulement et la complexe histoire. Les princes andalous firent de la culture un projet politique, un ferment de légitimité, le moyen de la concurrence entre eux, contribuant à fixer pour des siècles l’image d’une péninsule savante. Professeur d’histoire médiévale de l’Islam à l’université de Paris Nanterre, Emmanuelle Tixier du Mesnil est spécialiste de la géographie arabe médiévale et de l’histoire d’al-Andalus. This beautifully produced volume is the first to survey the Metropolitan Museum's world-renowned collection of European furniture. The makers of some of the objects are unknown, but most of the pieces can be identified by label, documentation, or style as the work of an outstanding European designer-craftsman, such as André-Charles Boulle, Thomas Chippendale, David Roentgen, or Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

Without the complex military machine that his forebears had built up over the course of the eighth century, it would have been impossible for Charlemagne to revive the Roman empire in the West. Early Carolingian Warfare is the first book-length study of how the Frankish dynasty, beginning with Pippin II, established its power and cultivated its military expertise in order to reestablish the regnum Francorum, a geographical area of the late Roman period that includes much of present-day France and western Germany. Bernard Bachrach has thoroughly examined contemporary sources, including court chronicles, military handbooks, and late Roman histories and manuals, to establish how the early Carolingians used their legacy of political and military techniques and strategies forged in imperial Rome to regain control in the West. Pippin II and his successors were not diverted by opportunities for financial enrichment in the short term through raids and campaigns outside of the regnum Francorum; they focused on conquest with sagacious sensibilities, preferring bloodless diplomatic solutions to unnecessarily destructive warfare, and disdained military glory for its own sake. But when they had to deploy their military forces, their operations were brutal and efficient. Their training was exceptionally well developed, and their techniques included hand-to-hand combat, regimented troop movements, fighting on horseback with specialized mounted soldiers, and the execution of lengthy sieges employing artillery. In order to sustain their long-term strategy, the early Carolingians relied on a late Roman model whereby soldiers were recruited from among the militarized population who were required by law to serve outside their immediate communities. The ability to mass and train large armies from among farmers and urban-dwellers gave the Carolingians the necessary power to lay siege to the old Roman fortress cities that dominated the military topography of the West. Bachrach includes fresh accounts of Charles Martel's defeat of the Muslims at Poitiers in 732, and Pippin's successful siege of Bourges in 762, demonstrating that in the matter of warfare there never was a western European Dark Age that ultimately was enlightened by some later Renaissance. The early Carolingians built upon surviving military institutions, adopted late antique technology, and effectively utilized their classical intellectual inheritance to prepare the way militarily for Charlemagne's empire.
