Sejarah kritik penafsiran pada dasarnya telah berkembang sejak metode tafsir dirumuskan sampai mendekati titik “mapan”, seperti yang dikatakan al-Dhahabi, bahwa penafsiran Alquran menggunakan Alquran dan Hadis Nabi Muhammad saw. adalah cara terbaik menafsirkan Alquran. Rumusan ini tampaknya berimplikasi: bahwa bentuk penafsiran yang keluar dari Alquran dan Hadis Nabi saw. adalah penafsiran yang kurang “kuat”. Namun pada kenyataannya masih cukup banyak beberapa kitab tafsir yang alih-alih menggunakan Hadis Nabi sebagai acuan, justru menjadikan israiliyat sebagai basis pemahaman. Sehingga yang terjadi bukan melihat pandangan Alquran tentang cerita-cerita terdahulu, tetapi menjadikan pandangan kitab terdahulu untuk melihat Alquran. Buku ini memaparkan topik yang relatif masih belum banyak ditulis dalam bahasa Indonesia, Al-Dakhīl fī al-Tafsīr. Secara aksiologis, topik ini penting untuk membuat ruang publik luas terlibat dalam dinamika penafsiran Alquran. Buku ini memberikan gambaran-gambaran penting bahwa bisa jadi ulama tidak luput dari kesalahan ketika menafsirkan Alquran dan, secara ensiklopedis, buku ini mencoba merangkum berbagai rumusan ulama tentang metode untuk mengetahui bentuk-bentuk kesalahan penafsiran tersebut. Ahmad Asrori Al Ishaqy (untuk kemudian peneliti menulisnya dengan “Kiai Asrori”). Kiai Asrori tidak hanya menjadi pendiri pondok pesantren Assalafi Al Fithrah dan STAI Al Fithrah, Kiai Asrori pun membentuk majelis dengan nama majelis “Jama’ah Al Khidmah”.
