Hajjaj bin Yusuf Ats-Tsaqafi, adalah seorang gubernur dan tangan kanan khalifah Abdul Malik bin Marwan (Khalifah ke-4 Dinasti Bani Umayyah), namun peran Hajjaj bin Yusuf lebih terkenal sebagai algojo Bani Umayyah. Dengan kekuasaan yang diberikannya, Hajjaj bin Yusuf tidak segan-segan meneror dan membunuh rakyatnya yang tidak sejalan dengan kebijakan penguasa. Yang terbunuh oleh tangannya hingga puluhan ribu nyawa, tidak peduli itu sahabat nabi, ulama maupun rakyat jelata. Tidah harus kesalahan besar, untuk kasus ringan pun dapat kehilangan nyawa. Namun di sisi lain, Hajjaj bin Yusuf juga dikenal suka membaca Al-Qur’an, memuliakan ahlul Qur’an, pandai berorasi dan memahami betul Al-Qur’an, dermawan, tidak suka memperkaya diri, dan tidak pernah mengkhianati khalifahnya. Namun seolah kebaikannya terhapuskan oleh keburukannya yang kelewat kejam.
