Since 9/11 many books have been published on Islamic terrorism, but few of these have considered the issue from the perspective of strategic studies or in terms of an “insurgency.” As a result, much of this literature ignores the process of radicalisation and fails to ascertain why some people turn to terrorism, while others from the same background do not. To counter this trend, Explaining Islamist Insurgencies explains how and why the process of Islamist radicalisation is an important step towards acts of terrorism and in the formation of terrorist organisations by focusing on Poso, a small town in Indonesia that experienced years of armed sectarian conflict between Muslim and Chrisitian communities in 2000-2007. Building on the frameworks provided by previous studies, Muhammed Tito Karnavian employs communications theory to explore the necessary precursors for the legitimising ideology, in this case Salafi-jihadism, to be effectively disseminated. With nearly 20 years of experience in academia and counter-terrorism operations in Indonesia, and as the current Chief of Papua Police, Karnavian employs his unparalleled access to information and individuals to delineate the various stages of the radicalisation of the Poso conflict and how radical organisations, such as al-Jamaah al-Islamiyyah (JI), came to be involved. This unique first-hand account of a counter-terrorist operation concludes by offering general policy implications that will be of use to both academics and practitioners.

English-language scholarship on Islamism has so far neglected detailed historical study of the Muslim Brotherhood affiliate in Lebanon, al-Jamàah al-Islamiyyah, due to its relatively slight political and social significance. This work describes al-Jamàah's origin and career, aiming to explain why this Lebanese party has not achieved the popular success of its Brotherhood cousins in Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. --In the first part of this introductory chapter, I define what I mean by 'Islamism.' In the second part, I review available literature on al-Jamàah al-Islamiyyah and describe how this study aims to explain why al-Jamàah has not been as successful as Muslim Brotherhood branches elsewhere. The subsequent chapters recount al-Jamàah's history, starting with Lebanese Islamic activism in the late 1940s and ending with al-Jamàah's defeat in the 2000 parliamentary elections. --In the conclusion, I argue that al-Jamàah has essentially become an 'Islamist accessory' for the Saudi-funded Hariri political movement, and that it is a second-order actor that must adjust to the larger, more powerful proxies around it. I attribute this position to al-Jamàah's civil war experience, arguing that the central leadership responded to Syrian pressure by adopting a general posture of quiescence rather than pursuing external support. The lack of sponsorship in the Lebanese arena should qualify any comparison with Brotherhood branches in other countries: al-Jamàah deserves credit for surviving and carving out its niche in Lebanese political life.

A Terrorist S Call To Global Jihad written by Jim Lacey and has been published by US Naval Institute Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Political Science categories.

The U.S. counterintelligence community identifies Abu Musab al-Suri as the most important theorist of the global Islamic jihad and considers his manifesto to be the most important strategic document produced by al Qaida or any jihadi organization in more than a decade. But to Americans his 1,600-page manuscript largely consists of incomprehensible, impenetrable Islamic scholarship. With this publication, defense analyst Jim Lacey delivers a meaningful distillation of al-Suri's Call to Global Islamic Jihad, a work that has been called the Mein Kampf of the movement. This project is sponsored by the United States Joint Forces Command.

The Talibanization Of Southeast Asia written by Bilveer Singh and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-30 with Political Science categories.

Long before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, awakened the United States and the Western world to the heightened level of the terrorist threat, Southeast Asia had been dealing with this threat. The bombing in Bali that killed 202 people, many of them Australian tourists, was by no means the region's first experience with Islamic extremism, which can be traced back to the 1940s, and the Darul Islam struggle. The most recent group to emerge is Al-Jama'ah Al-Islamiyah (AJAI), the most potent Islamic terrorist organization to date in the region and the group behind the Bali bombing. Understanding the process of Talibanization in Southeast Asia, which was once an oasis of moderate Islam in the modern world, is a key to unraveling the mystery of the increased radicalization in the region. Essentially, this involved the establishment of a political system that was more Islamic in character, either nationally or within a specific territory of a national state. This book analyzes the increasing Talibanization of Southeast Asia, a relatively new phenomenon that involves the adoption of Islamist doctrines, ideologies, and values that are largely militant in character, and that for some groups includes the adoption of violence to achieve their goals. This has succeeded in posing one of the most serious security challenges to the region since the end of the Cold War. Jihadists are operating in small and localized cells even though the broad goals remain the same, namely, to spread sharia, establish an Islamic state, and bring down secular regimes. As most governments do not have the credibility or the expertise to diminish the threat posed by Islamist extremism, Wahhabism, and Salafism, Southeast Asia is in danger of being Talibanized in the near future.
