Era preciso enfrentar sol escaldante, chuva aos cântaros, pragas e doenças nas lavouras e nas pessoas. A vida era intensa, educação carente e quase nenhuma compreensão de mundo. O que sobrepunha era subserviência aos dogmas da Igreja. O padre era a voz da imprensa! O livro retrata o quanto a Igreja se envolvia nas vidas das famílias, seja nas orientações espirituais, ou no envolvimento econômico da paróquia com festas e quermesses. O Padre era um instrumento não apenas das palavras de Deus, mas da política e da educação. Enfim, a narrativa leva o leitor à reflexão permitindo compreender melhor o mundo contemporâneo. Entretanto, o autor tomou coragem para nos contar que o padre de sua paróquia, na época, envolveu-se ao extremo na campanha política, ao ponto de exigir de seus fieis que votassem no candidato que ele estava apoiando. “Votem no meu candidato ou serão excomungados”. Aquela campanha foi o terror. Meu pai perdeu tudo! Vendeu sua propriedade se mudou para outra localidade se distanciando daquele inferno. Você consegue imaginar um padre chegar em sua casa, reunir a sua família e dizer “votem em meu candidato ou serão excomungados?”

This book fills the Iberian linguistic and geographical gap in Arthurian studies, replacing the now-outdated work by William J. Entwistle (1925). It covers Arthurian material in all the major Peninsular Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician); it follows the spread of Arthurian material overseas with the seaborne expansion of Spain and Portugal from Iberia into America and Asia in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; and, as well as examining the specifically Arthurian texts themselves, it traces the continued influence of the medieval Arthurian material and its impact on the society, literature and culture of the Golden Age and beyond, including its presence in Don Quixote, the influential Spanish Arthurian-inspired romance Amadís de Gaula, and in Spanish ballads. Such was its influence that we find an indigenous American woman called ‘Iseo’ (Iseult); and an Arthurian story appeared in an indigenous language of the Philippines, Tagalog, as late as the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
