Excerpt from Mohammed and Islam Born in Hungary in 1850, he carried on his university studies at Budapest, Berlin, Leyden and more par ticularly at Leipzig. After obtainn his degree of Doc tor of Philosophy, he travelled for a year in the Orient and was one of the first Europeans to continue his Arabic studies at al-azhar, the famous University of Cairo. Through this opportunity he not only became conversant with modern Arabic in addition to his knowledge of the classical speech, but came into close contact with native theologians which strengthened his interest in those phases of Mohammedanism to which he has devoted the greater part of his career. On his return to his own country he became connected with the University of Budapest, where he has occupied for many years the chair of Oriental Languages. His productivity has been as extensive as it has been valuable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Making Of Salafism written by Henri Lauzière and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-17 with History categories.

Some Islamic scholars hold that Salafism is an innovative and rationalist effort at Islamic reform that emerged in the late nineteenth century but gradually disappeared in the mid twentieth. Others argue Salafism is an anti-innovative and antirationalist movement of Islamic purism that dates back to the medieval period yet persists today. Though they contradict each other, both narratives are considered authoritative, making it hard for outsiders to grasp the history of the ideology and its core beliefs. Introducing a third, empirically based genealogy, The Making of Salafism understands the concept as a recent phenomenon projected back onto the past, and it sees its purist evolution as a direct result of decolonization. Henri Lauzière builds his history on the transnational networks of Taqi al-Din al-Hilali (1894–1987), a Moroccan Salafi who, with his associates, participated in the development of Salafism as both a term and a movement. Traveling from Rabat to Mecca, from Calcutta to Berlin, al-Hilali interacted with high-profile Salafi scholars and activists who eventually abandoned Islamic modernism in favor of a more purist approach to Islam. Today, Salafis tend to claim a monopoly on religious truth and freely confront other Muslims on theological and legal issues. Lauzière's pathbreaking history recognizes the social forces behind this purist turn, uncovering the popular origins of what has become a global phenomenon.

The Qur An Morality And Critical Reason written by Muhammad Shahrur and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-15 with Religion categories.

This book presents the work and ideas of the Syrian writer Muhammad Shahrur to the English-speaking world. Shahrur is at the moment the most innovative intellectual thinker in the Arab Middle East. Often described as the ‘Martin Luther of Islam,’ he offers a liberal, progressive reading of Islam that aims to counter the influences of religious fundamentalism and radical politics. Shahrur’s innovative interpretation of the Qur’an offers groundbreaking new ideas, based on his conviction that centuries of historical Islam, including scholarship in the traditional Islamic religious sciences, have obscured or even obliterated the Qur’an’s progressive and revolutionary message. That message is one that has endured through each period of human history in which Islam has existed, encouraging Muslims to apply the most contemporary perspective available to interpret the Qur’an’s meaning.

Chance And Determinism In Avicenna And Averroes written by Catarina Belo and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-02-28 with Philosophy categories.

This book examines the question whether medieval Muslim philosophers Avicenna (Arabic Ibn Sīnā 980-1037) and Averroes (Arabic Ibn Rushd 1126-1198) are determinists. With a focus on physics and metaphysics it studies their views on chance events in nature, as well as matter, in particular prime matter, and divine providence. In addition it sets their positions against the historical/philosophical background that influenced their response, the Greco-Arabic philosophical tradition - Aristotelian and Neoplatonic - on the one hand, and the tradition of Islamic theology (kalām) on the other. In comparing their philosophical systems, it lays emphasis on the way in which Avicenna and Averroes use these traditions to offer an original answer to the problem of determinism.
