Lawrence Ferlinghetti nasce nel 1919 a Yonkers, New York, da padre italiano e madre di origini franco-portoghesi. È poeta, romanziere, traduttore, editore, pittore, autore di teatro e drammi radiofonici. Anima della San Francisco Renaissance, che negli anni 50 stravolge le convenzioni letterarie e sociali del tempo, Ferlinghetti è da allora protagonista di una intensa attività creativa, mai disgiunta da una profonda attenzione a tematiche politiche, sociali ed ecologiche. Fondatore assieme a Pete D. Martin della famosa City Lights Bookstore, Ferlinghetti ha sempre compiuto scelte editoriali coraggiose, come la pubblicazione di “Urlo” di Allen Ginsberg, vero manifesto della beat generation, per la quale viene accusato di vendita e distribuzione di materiale osceno: il noto processo del 1956 termina con una storica vittoria legale contro la censura. Negli anni ha partecipato a numerosi festival e reading di poesia, tra i quali quelli storici alla Royal Albert Hall di Londra (1965), a Castelporziano (1978), ad Amsterdam (1981), dimostrandosi viaggiatore instancabile e artista sempre attento alla difesa degli ultimi e del pianeta. Ha esposto le proprie opere pittoriche in diversi musei e gallerie sia negli Stati Uniti che in Europa. Insignito nel 1998 del titolo di primo Poeta Laureato della città di San Francisco, Ferlinghetti ha ricevuto svariati riconoscimenti, tra cui recentemente quello di Commendatore al merito della Repubblica Italiana. Il suo “A Coney Island of the Mind” tradotto in decine di lingue, è tra i libri di poesia più letti al mondo con oltre un milione di copie stampate.

Words Against Words is the first book to consider the philosophical works of Carlo Michelstaedter (1887-1910) from a stylistic point of view. It focuses on the links between poetic and rhetoric in Michelstaedter’s major work, La Persuasione e la Rettorica, well known for its original multilingualism, embodiment of subgenres, dialogues, apologues and parables, technical jargons. In the context of the early twentieth century ‘crisis of language’ in Central Europe, Carlo Michelstaedter, a young Italian speaking Jew from Gorizia who left the Austro-Hungarian territory to study in Florence, articulates one of the most radical examples of ‘negative thought’, while at the same time struggling to define a way to regain freedom from contingency, unity of meaning, and the absolute state of ‘persuasion’.Malcolm Angelucci’s book reads La Persuasione e la Rettorica, against itself, demonstrating how it is in the practice of signification, in the ‘writing’ of a philosophy and a poetic, that the challenge against the inadequacy of words is played out, in one of the most interesting examples of Italian speculation of the period. Angelucci’s post-structuralist approach and analysis of rhetorical figures adopts and reworks the Bakhtinian concept of ‘dialogism’, in order to demonstrate the peculiar ‘loss of centre’ of Michelstaedter’s text, and the relativisation of the pretences of the hero/narrator in ways which are coherent with the best examples of early Central European Modernism.This book intervenes in the growing debate on Michelstaedter in the English speaking world, and suits an audience of academics and tertiary students interested in Italian and Central European literature and culture in the first decades of the Twentieth century. The short story writers featured in this brief anthology – all established figures on the Italian literary scene – have been specifically chosen as being representative of the various geographical regions in the Italian peninsula, ranging from Ginzburg, Pavese and Soldati (Piedmont), Colombi Guidotti and Guareschi (Emilia Romagna region), Tozzi (Tuscany), D’Annunzio (Abruzzi region) and Moravia (Lazio region) to Pirandello and Verga (Sicily) and Deledda (Sardinia). Twelve of these literary masters’ very best novelle – richly diverse both thematically and stylistically – can be read in the original, unabridged Italian with parallel English translations, accompanied by a brief account of the life and literary achievements of each writer, as well as a few notes on the context in which the narrative was written and some relevant features of theme and content. The novelle themselves, originally published in Italy between 1880 (marking the publication of Verga’s La lupa) and 1971 (the year of the publication of Soldati’s Una donna comprensiva), span almost a whole century. Although presented in chronological order of publication – being self-contained racconti – they can be read in any order. All of them lend themselves to the leitmotif of the collection: that of a woman as the central character (D’Annunzio’s Candia, the Princess in Deledda’s fairy-tale, Pirandello’s Mommina, gnà Pina in Verga’s story, etc.). Two of the writers, Grazia Deledda and Natalia Ginzburg, are themselves women writing about women. The anthology, on the one hand, offers readers the opportunity to savour a few delights of Italian literature and culture, and, on the other, promotes effective language learning through a wide spectrum of language and styles. While remaining faithful to the originals, the translations lay emphasis on readability and fluency, thus making their perusal a pleasurable experience in itself. In addition, the stories in this collection will certainly stimulate further interest in Italian literature.

L’IDEA RACCONTATA DALL’AUTORE “Tutto è iniziato da un piccolo problema di compensazione ad un orecchio che mi impediva di scendere nelle profondità del mare. Non potevo resistere, desideravo con tutte le forze tornare ad immergermi in apnea ma non potevo: i dottori mi dissero che avrei dovuto aspettare almeno 3 mesi. Era un tempo assolutamente troppo lungo così ho deciso di solcare le profondità con la fantasia visitando luoghi davvero incredibili. Alla fine ci sono voluti 8 mesi per finire il libro e altrettanti per tornare in mare, ma in fondo ne è valsa la pena. Il libro è stato un modo per ricordare e ordinare tutte le emozioni che il mare mi ha regalato e in più la prima volta che ho rimesso la testa sotto a quel manto blu incantato ho provato una sensazione davvero magica: mi sembrava una favola e probabilmente lo era e lo è ancora oggi.”

Metà del Seicento: Inghilterra e Francia combattono contro la potenza degli spagnoli e iniziano ad inviare navi corsare in scorribanda per l'Oceano per combattere quelle nemiche e danneggiare così il commercio delle loro colonie e nel1625 due navi, con a bordo i primi corsari, gettano l'ancora davanti all'isola di San Cristoforo e vi si stabiliscono. Ma una nave spagnola distrugge dopo cinque anni la loro base e i pochi che riescono a sopravvivere trovano un rifugio all'isola della Tortuga facendone la base di partenza per tutte le loro spedizioni. Gli abitanti di Santo Domingo però, vedendo che il loro commercio è in pericolo, dopo un attacco riescono a sconfiggerli e ad allontanarli. Un giorno però, i bucanieri e i filibustieri riescono a far ritorno all'isola. Arriva intanto alla Tortuga un nobile italiano circondato dal mistero, un certo Emilio signore di Ventimiglia, Valpenta e Roccabruna. Durante un assedio in Europa, durante la guerra fra Francia e Spagna, gli spagnoli tagliata la ritirata comprano un duca fiammingo, Van Guld, ordinandogli di tradire i superstiti italo-francesi rifugiatisi in una rocca. Riesce nel suo malvagio piano, ma uccide il fratello maggiore di Emilio, che, dopo essersi miracolosamente salvato dalla carneficina degli Spagnoli, per vendicarsi lo insegue nei Caraibi dove lui e i suoi due fratelli diventano il Corsaro Nero, Rosso e Verde(nero). Il romanzo ha inizio quando due filibustieri, Carmaux e Van Stiller, vengono ripescati dalla "Folgore", nave filibustiera appartenente a Emilio di Roccabruna, conte di Valpenta e di Ventimiglia, conosciuto come il Corsaro Nero. Una volta a bordo, i due raccontano al terribile comandante che suo fratello, Enrico di Ventimiglia conosciuto come il Corsaro Rosso era stato impiccato nella piazza di Maracaibo per ordine di Van Guld, governatore della città. Emilio decide così di recarsi a Maracaibo per sottrarre il cadavere del fratello e, reclutati Carmaux e Van Stiller, affida il comando della nave a Morgan, suo luogotenente. Dopo aver catturato una guardia spagnola e guadagnato l'aiuto di Moko, un africano eremita, i filibustieri giungono aMaracaibo. Dopo numerose avventure il Corsaro riesce a rapire la salma del fratello e a rimbarcarsi sulla Folgoredove, dopo aver celebrato il funerale del fratello, giura solennemente che sterminerà Van Guld e tutta la sua famiglia. Sulla strada del ritorno per la Tortuga, i filibustieri assaltano una nave spagnola che trasporta una bionda fanciulla che si fa chiamare Honorata Willerman, duchessa di Weltrendrem, di cui Emilio si innamora, ricambiato. Dopo essersi imbattuti in un terribile uragano la nave giunge finalmente alla Tortuga. Qui il racconto s'interrompe e l'autore introduce una parentesi storica, citando le imprese di grandi filibustieri realmente esistiti e spiegando cosa siano la filibusteria e la bucaneria. Ha poi inizio il racconto della spedizione per assalire Maracaibo. La caccia di Emilio lo porta, insieme a Carmaux, Wan Stiller, Moko e il soldato che avevano catturato poco tempo prima, promosso a guida del drappello, nella foresta vergine. Lì il gruppo incontrerà coguari e puzzole, vampiri, sabbie mobili e antropofagi. Giunti quasi alla meta, il soldato e Moko si fermano, mentre i tre filibustieri proseguono la caccia. Seguirà uno scontro contro le forze di Van Guld e l'assalto a Gibraltar. Finite queste avventure pericolose, il Corsaro scoprirà che Honorata è in realtà la figlia di Van Guld e, combattuto tra onore e amore, farà imbarcare la giovane su una scialuppa e l'abbandonerà in mare con enorme dolore. Il romanzo si conclude con Carmaux che dice al suo amico Wan Stiller: «Guarda lassù! Il Corsaro Nero piange».
