Analyzes several novels by Albert Cohen (1895-1981) - "Solal", "Mangeclous", "Belle du Seigneur", and "Les Valereux". Cohen, through his heroes, describes crisis and tensions between Jews and non-Jews. In "Solal" the hero is a beautiful and intelligent Jew born on a Greek island, who is accepted into the Gentile society of Paris and Geneva; he becomes a minister and marries a non-Jew. Solal accepts the antisemitic image of the Jews created by the non-Jews and experiences self-hatred. In "Mangeclous" (1938) the heroes use expressions from "La France juive" by Édouard Drumont, reflecting the antisemitic atmosphere in Europe in the late 1930s. Pp. 129-141 discuss the ways in which Cohen, using Drumont's antisemitic expressions, ridicules the antisemitic stereotypical image of the Jew. Notes that Cohen, himself an assimilated Jew, did not try to escape from Jewish themes as did many other Jewish writers of his time. On the contrary, he reflected on the incompatibility and conflict between these two worlds, and how one side (the Jews) tried to ignore this incompatibility.

Sur des thèmes variés (le sionisme, les Lumières, le corps, les figures de la maternité, le picaresque, le « nouveau roman »...), une dizaine de chercheurs explorent ici l'oeuvre d'Albert Cohen en prolongeant et renouvelant ces travaux pionniers. Ce volume, initialement paru en 2003, a été revu et augmenté d'un témoignage de Charles Galpérin et d'un article de Denise R. Goitein-Galpérin elle-même sur les rapports entre Albert Cohen et André Spire.

« Humorialiste » : c'est par ce mot-valise (où se retrouvent l'humoriste, le moraliste et le mémorialiste) que Judith Kauffmann, enseignante à l'Université de Bar-Ilan, caractérisa naguère l'œuvre d'Albert Cohen dont elle fut l'une des meilleures spécialistes. Les Cahiers Albert Cohen rendent ici hommage à l'auteur de Grotesque et marginalité. Variations sur l'effet-Mangeclous (Peter Lang, 2000), qui nous a quittés en 2007. Certains articles sont directement en dialogue avec ses travaux et portent sur quelques-uns de ses thèmes familiers : le comique, le grotesque, la judéité , d'autres portent sur des sujets différents et fraient des voies nouvelles. Mathieu Belisle propose une analyse originale des paradoxes du personnage de Mangeclous« le mal né ». Maxime Decout revient sur « la fabrique du personnage juif » chez Cohen et sur le rôle séminal du Silbermann de Lacretelle. Ces Cahiers comportent aussi des études sur le comique gastronomique (Claudine Ruimi), la bêtise (Tiphaine Rivière) ou l’absurde (Julie Lescroart). Baptiste Bohet fait état des découvertes sur l’écriture de Belle du Seigneur que l’outil informatique a rendues possibles. Maurice Lugassy poursuit son travail de dépouillement d’archives concernant les activités sionistes de Cohen.

Criticism on the textual and iconographic construction of the city is extensive, yet the problem of historical change in representations of "the urban" has received little attention. Believing traditional accounts are limited by their reflection of a specific historical moment, Joan Ramon Resina and Dieter Ingenschay focus, by contrast, on transition. In essays written for this volume, scholars of literary and visual studies, the history of architecture, cultural theory, and urban geography explore the ways perceptual or conceptual paradigms of the city supersede or replace others, while at the same time retaining the "after-image" of what went before. The writers touch on a wide variety of issues related to contemporary urban cultures as they journey through cities including New York, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Tijuana, Berlin, and London. Drawing on the work of Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin, Camilo José Cela, Honoré de Balzac, and Alfred Stieglitz, their approach is broadly cultural rather than technical. After-Images of the City takes into account the intrinsic instability of the image and reveals that representations of the modern metropolis cannot be fixed in time and history.

Le lecteur d'Albert Cohen est assez vite frappé par la multiplicité des références à la folie dans l'oeuvre. Pathologies diverses, folie prophétique du personnage principal, folie amoureuse, folie du monde, lyrisme échevelé et goût oriental de la grandeur et du travestissement : la folie est partout. Cohen, lui-même lecteur et admirateur de Freud, se livre à une psychopathologie de la vie quotidienne de ses personnages et nous conduit de l'appréhension clinique des comportements (narcissisme, mégalomanie, délire de persécution, scarifications, pulsions suicidaires) à une vision plus symbolique de la folie, carnavalesque au sens de Bakhtine ou prophétique au sens de Neher. Les articles qui composent cet important dossier (C. Stolz, B. Bohet, D. Poizat, M. Decout, M. Davies, A. Jean, C. Quint, A. Schaffner), nous invitent à une promenade dans les différents aspects de ce motif récurrent dans l’oeuvre, mais jamais exploré en tant que tel.
