Alberto da Veiga Guignard (1896-1962) é reconhecido como um dos mais importantes artistas modernos em atuação no Brasil na primeira metade do século XX. Sua produção se destaca principalmente pelas paisagens montanhosas de tom lírico que aludem às festas juninas e que, no geral, foram interpretadas pela crítica de arte como índice de uma visão pura e ingênua sobre o país. Este estudo pretende investigar as origens da produção artística de Guignard, desde sua formação europeia até o diálogo que estabelece com o meio artístico brasileiro a partir do final dos anos 1920, a fim de ampliar a compreensão do sentido moderno de sua obra. Taisa Palhares é professora de estética do Departamento de Filosofia do Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas da Unicamp. Foi pesquisadora e curadora na Pinacoteca do Estado, em São Paulo (2005-2015), e é crítica de arte desde 2000. Recebeu o prêmio Jabuti pela organização do livro Arte brasileira na Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (2010). É autora de diversos ensaios sobre arte moderna e contemporânea brasileira, bem como do livro Aura: a crise da arte em Walter Benjamin (2006).

Minas Gerais is a state in southeastern Brazil deeply connected to the nation’s slave past and home to many traditions related to the African diaspora. Addressing a wide range of traditions helping to define the region, ethnomusicologist Jonathon Grasse examines the complexity of Minas Gerais by exploring the intersections of its history, music, and culture. Instruments, genres, social functions, and historical accounts are woven together to form a tapestry revealing a cultural territory’s development. The deep pool of Brazilian scholarship referenced in the book, with original translations by the author, cites over two hundred Portuguese-language publications focusing on Minas Gerais. This research was augmented by fieldwork, observations, and interviews completed over a twenty-five-year period and includes original photographs, many taken by the author. Hearing Brazil: Music and Histories in Minas Gerais surveys the colonial past, the vast hinterland countryside, and the modern, twenty-first-century state capital of Belo Horizonte, the metropolitan region of which is today home to over six million. Diverse legacies are examined, including an Afro-Brazilian heritage, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century liturgical music of the region’s “Minas Baroque,” the instrument known as the viola, a musical profile of Belo Horizonte, and a study of the regionalist themes developed by the popular music collective the Clube da Esquina (Corner Club) led by Milton Nascimento with roots in the 1960s. Hearing Brazil champions the notion that Brazil’s unique role in the world is further illustrated by regionalist studies presenting details of musical culture.

A presente dissertação tem como objetivo analisar a obra de Alberto da Veiga Guignard (1896-1962), focalizando especialmente seu percurso nas décadas de 1930 e 1940, período em que ela constituiu alguns de seus aspectos poéticos decisivos um vocabulário lírico ligado ao prosaico e o apreço por uma pintura de superfície. O estudo busca mostrar como esses aspectos sobretudo o lirismo colhido a materiais humildes da vida cotidiana podem estar ligados à proximidade do pintor com os poetas Manuel Bandeira e Murilo Mendes e, de outro modo, também com a imaginação onírica do artista Ismael Nery, que de algum modo dialoga com as paisagens imaginárias que marcam tão fortemente a pintura de Guignard. A dissertação procurou discutir a obra do pintor no quadro do modernismo brasileiro, principalmente no que concerne à questão nacional-popular, presente na pintura de Guignard de modo muito mais sutil e refratado, conforme se argumenta, do que em muitos de seus contemporâneos da geração modernista dos anos 1930.
