Alcohol abuse is a preventable disease that impacts our society at various levels. Its negative consequences begin with effects on an individual's life and health and then expand into the population level via an increased risk of accidents and a greater financial burden to the country. The purpose of our study is to identify the patient populations in the emergency department (ED) that will likely have the most benefit from alcohol screening and a brief negotiated intervention. We reviewed a total of 1,285 electronic medical records and found 512 charts for patients who reported drinking alcohol above the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) recommended limit. Of those 512 charts, 55 were alcohol-related ED visits and 457 were non alcohol-related ED visits. We found no significant difference between the median of Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) and the readiness-to-change (RTC) score between alcohol-related and non alcohol-related ED visits. Our multinomial logistic regression showed that patients in the age group 22 to 29 had a higher chance of reporting a high RTC score, whereas the age group 50 to 64 had the lowest probability of reporting a high RTC. Other patient characteristics, including gender, insurance status, education, language, using illicit drugs and whether the ED visit was alcohol-related or trauma-related, did not predict either moderate or high RTC scores.
