Parlare di Alessandro Vessella come uno dei più importanti musicisti che si sono occupati di banda non è facile, infatti la sua notorietà è rimasta legata principalmente alle trascrizioni per banda. Il presente lavoro ripercorre i momenti più importanti della vita di Alessandro Vessella, da quando a 25 anni, illustre cittadino sconosciuto di Alife, vinse il concorso come direttore della Banda Comunale di Roma. Da quel giorno Alessandro Vessella è rimasto legato ai principali avvenimenti della capitale, la morte di Umberto I, la solenne sepoltura di Goffredo Mameli, l’arrivo a Roma di Guglielmo I° di Germania, di Eduardo VII° di Inghilterra, la costruzione dei nuovi teatri romani, le tournee in Germania, Inghilterra, Spagna e Malta. Il secondo ed il terzo capitolo, si soffermano in modo particolare sulla “titanica lotta” del maestro per fare accettare, prima ed applaudire dopo, nelle piazze, (in particolare Piazza Colonna di Roma) la grande musica tedesca, italiana e francese. Il capitoli quarto quinto e sesto illustrano la situazione bandistica in Italia prima e dopo la riforma di Vessella. Verso la fine dell’ Ottocento ed inizio Novecento la banda riscuoteva grande successo, con i suoi concerti nelle piazze, permettendo a tutti, in particolare modo a coloro che per esigenze economiche non potevano frequentare i teatri, di gustare spettacoli di musica colta in speciale modo quella operistica. In quegli anni la banda viveva dei momenti difficili legati all’organico strumentale. Ampio sguardo sarà rivolto alle pochissime opere del maestro Vessella, che per una migliore comprensione sono state divise in più parti: le composizioni per pianoforte, le composizioni per coro, le composizioni per orchestra, le composizioni per banda, le pubblicazioni di vari libri riguardanti la banda. Particolare attenzione è stata data alla sua opera fondamentale Trattato di strumentazione per banda da cui si possono decifrare alcune tecniche ed alcuni criteri di trascrizione riguardanti: l’organico strumentale, la tonalità, il tipo di trascrizione, la melodia e il timbro, l’accompagnamento, la semplificazione esecutiva e le varie combinazioni strumentali.

A virtuoso violinist, conductor, composer, and a professor of mathematics and botany, Francesco Galeazzi (1758–1819) firmly believed that musical education should be clear, demonstrable, and practical. In 1791 and 1796, he published the two volumes of his Elementi teorico-practici di musica, a treatise that demonstrated both his thorough grounding in the work of earlier theorists and his own approach to musical study. The first volume gave precise instructions on the violin and how to play it; the second demonstrated his command of other instruments and genres and provided comprehensive introductions to music theory, music history, and music aesthetics.
