Giuliano Pancaldi sets us within the cosmopolitan cultures of Enlightenment Europe to tell the story of Alessandro Volta--the brilliant man whose name is forever attached to electromotive force. Providing fascinating details, many previously unknown, Pancaldi depicts Volta as an inventor who used his international network of acquaintances to further his quest to harness the power of electricity. This is the story of a man who sought recognition as a natural philosopher and ended up with an invention that would make an everyday marvel of electric lighting. Examining the social and scientific contexts in which Volta operated--as well as Europe's reception of his most famous invention--Volta also offers a sustained inquiry into long-term features of science and technology as they developed in the early age of electricity. Pancaldi considers the voltaic cell, or battery, as a case study of Enlightenment notions and their consequences, consequences that would include the emergence of the "scientist" at the expense of the "natural philosopher." Throughout, Pancaldi highlights the complex intellectual, technological, and social ferment that ultimately led to our industrial societies. In so doing, he suggests that today's supporters and critics of Enlightenment values underestimate the diversity and contingency inherent in science and technology--and may be at odds needlessly. Both an absorbing biography and a study of scientific and technological creativity, this book offers new insights into the legacies of the Enlightenment while telling the remarkable story of the now-ubiquitous battery.

If asked to list important inventors, few remember to include Alessandro Volta. Yet, his is a household name more spoken than that of Alexander Graham Bell, the Wright Brothers, or even Thomas Edison. That’s because the terms “volt” and “voltage” can be attributed to Volta, the inventor of the “Voltaic pile,” which is recognized as the first electric battery. A product of the Age of Enlightenment—a time when ideas about reason, science, literature and liberty took center stage—Volta employed a very modern, hands-on approach to his work. Though he had no formal education, he was the first person to identify the gas known as methane, and created the first authoritative list of conducting metals. Alessandro Volta saw things not just as they were, but as what they could be. He was a disrupter, an innovator and a visionary. Above all, he was relentless. Without Volta’s hunger to create and his drive to invent and discover, we might not have electric cars, laptops, cellphones, and hearing aids today.

Corrosion For Everybody written by Alec Groysman and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-21 with Technology & Engineering categories.

People seldom enjoy corrosion. They usually perceive it as a nasty phenomenon with which they must cope. Yet many people, far from the corrosion field, come across it because of their professional duty. Lawyers, historians, doctors, architects, philosophers, artists, and archeologists, to name a few, may want or need to understand the principles of corrosion. This volume explains this important topic in a lucid, interesting, and popular form to everybody: to students and young engineers who are only beginning their studies, to scientists and engineers who have dealt with corrosion for many years, and to non-specialists involved in corrosion problems. The book uses a fresh writing style, with some new explanations relating to thermodynamics of oxidation of iron and mild steels in water, reversible and irreversible potential, solubility of oxygen in water and aqueous solutions of electrolytes, corrosion of metals in fuels, corrosion of storage tanks for fuels and their corrosion control, corrosion monitoring in practice, humanitarian aspects of corrosion science and technology (history of the evolution of knowledge about corrosion, relationships between corrosion and philosophy, corrosion and art). Many practical examples of various corrosion phenomena are given.

The Ambiguous Frog written by Marcello Pera and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-14 with Science categories.

How do ideas become accepted by the scientific community? How and why do scientists choose among empirically equivalent theories? In this pathbreaking book translated from the Italian, Marcello Pera addresses these questions by exploring the politics, rhetoric, scientific practices, and metaphysical assumptions that entered into the famous Galvani-Volta controversy of the late eighteenth century. This lively debate erupted when two scientists, each examining the muscle contractions of a dissected frog in contact with metal, came up with opposing but experimentally valid explanations of the phenomenon. Luigi Galvani, a doctor and physiologist, believed that he had discovered animal electricity (electrical body fluid existing naturally in a state of disequilibrium), while the physicist Alessandro Volta attributed the contractions to ordinary physical electricity. Beginning with the electrical concepts understood by scientists in the 1790s, Pera traces the careers of Galvani and Volta and explains their laboratory procedures. He shows that their controversy derived from two basic, irreducible interpretations of the proper nature of a common domain: Galvani saw the frog phenomenon as the work of biological organs, Volta as that of a physical apparatus. The initial preference for Volta's theory, maintains Pera, depended not on clear-cut methodological rules, but on a dialectical dispute for which the renowned physicist was better equipped, partly because he shared the dominant metaphysical views of his time. Originally published in 1991. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

L'identità del fluido elettrico col cosí detto fluido galvanico, vittoriosamente dimostrata con nuove esperienze ed osservazioni. Notes by Alessandro Volta, compiled and edited by Pietro Configliachi. This is a memoir of Alessandro Volta's researches surrounding Galvanism and his discovery of the Voltaic Pile, which he then put to good use in many experiments which had as their aim the identity of this novel electric fluid, of low tension but of great abundance, with the common electric fluid of static origin, derived through friction. Although now over 200 years old, it was written during a seminal moment in the history of science. The seven main articles of this memoir are:ARTICLE I: Of simple Galvanism, or rather of phenomena thus called galvanic, produced by the application of only two or three conductors, or rather differing electric motors.ARTICLE II: Of compound Galvanism, or to better tell it, Voltaism; that is, of the arrays formed by an ordered series of simple Electromotors.ARTICLE III: Of the power which Electromotors have of charging, in the briefest interval of time, and to a tension equal to their own, any Leyden jar whatever, or battery [of jars]; and to hence have these jars give shocks proportional to such charges, and to their respective capacities.ARTICLE IV: Further evaluation of the worthiness of the electric discharges, under the double relation of their intensity, or electrometric tension, and of the quantity of fluid which shapes them, along with various researches in Electrometry.ARTICLE V: On the little conductive virtue of water, maximally pure: through which an electric current, while passing through there, broadens as much as possible, taking beyond the straight path many other paths, however long and oblique.Application of this to the shocks which are had under water, equally from the Torpedoes as from the piles, and from the Leyden jars.ARTICLE VI: Of the effects which, besides the shocks, the Electromotors produce upon the animal organs, and especially upon those of the senses.ARTICLE VII: Continuation of the preceding article: or rather, special observations surrounding a few circumstances which modify the strength and the quality of the impressions conveyed by the Electromotors upon our organs.

Starting from two unpublished manuscripts, this book attempts to revive an extraordinary, albeit poorly known, season of scientific research of the late XVIII century, which, from the study of the peculiar properties of some singular fishes, leads, through the unpredictable path of science, to the discovery of the electric nature of nerve signal, and, moreover to the invention of the voltaic battery. Besides presenting a crucial transition phase in the natural philosophy of the Enlightenment, this book is written with the ambition of reviving the fascination of science and its history.
