Kallisthenes - von dem nur noch Fragmente vorliegen - war Historiker im Gefolge Alexanders und ist daher nicht als "neutrale" Quelle anzusehen, sondern als jemand der die Geschichte so aufschrieb, wie Alexander sie berliefert haben wollte. Das fr heste - heute noch vollst ndig vorliegende - Geschichtswerk ist aus dem ersten Jahrhundert vor Christus im 17. Buch der "Biblioth ke historik " von Diodor erhalten. Die nach Auffassung zahlreicher Historiker beste und verl sslichste Behandlung stammt von Arrian, der aber erst im 2. Jh. nach Christus lebte - rund 400 Jahre nach Alexanders Tod. Die Quellen zu Alexander sind folglich mit gro er Vorsicht zu behandeln und grunds tzlich immer kritisch zu hinterfragen. Die moderne Literatur hat ebenfalls zahlreiche Werke zu Alexander III. - und auch dessen Aufenthalt in gypten - verfasst. Allerdings gibt es ein deutliches Ungleichgewicht in den Thematiken. W hrend Alexanders Zug zum Ammon-Zeus-Heiligtum in der Oase Siwa sowie zu seinen Motiven f r den Zug nach gypten h ufig thematisiert wird, ist die Anzahl der Publikationen zur Neuordnung der Verwaltung sowie zu Kleomenes von Naukratis geradezu d rftig. Diese Proseminararbeit soll untersuchen, warum Alexander die Besetzung gyptens - die von einigen Historikern als unverst ndlicher Umweg dargestellt wird - als wichtigen Baustein seiner Eroberungspl ne ben tigte. Der Autor vertritt die These, dass Alexander sowohl wegen finanziellen und milit rischen Gr nden als auch aus Prestigegr nden gypten erobern musste.

Hervorzuheben ist die von ihm praktizierte Städtegründung. Alexander gründete bis zu seinem Tod in Babylon mehrere Alexandreia in verschiedenen eroberten Gebieten seines Reiches. Dabei stellt die Erbauung von Alexandreia in Ägypten die erste große Städtegründung auf seinem Weg durch den Orient dar. Bis heute existiert die immer wieder neu geformte und aufgebaute Stadt im Norden Ägyptens an der Mittelmeerküste. Schon immer übte diese großartige Stadt eine einzigartige Anziehungskraft auf die Menschen aus. Ein erhaltenes Schriftstück, nämlich ein Brief eines Jungen an seinen Vater, verdeutlicht dies: "Das hast Du schön gemacht! Nicht mitgenommen hast Du mich mit Dir in die Stadt! Wenn Du mich nicht mit Dir nach Alexandria nimmst, dann werde ich Dich weder einen Brief schreiben noch spreche ich mit Dich, noch wünsche ich Dich Gesundheit! Wenn Du nach Alexandria gehst, nehme ich keine Hand von Dir und grüße Dich nie wieder! Wenn Du mich nicht mitnehmen willst, wird es so!"1 Doch wie kam es überhaupt dazu, dass Alexander gerade in Ägypten den Bau dieser Stadt in Auftrag gab? Weshalb verschwendete der Kriegsherr noch mehr Zeit dort, anstatt den persischen Großkönig Dareios III. weiter Richtung Osten zu jagen? Sah er in der Eroberung Ägyptens und der dortigen Niederlassung von Landsleuten eine Festigung des Mittelmeerraumes und hatte er Angst davor, den Ägyptern zu viel Autonomie zu überlassen, sodass diese einen neuen Nationalstaat gründen könnten? Es lassen sich vor allem ökonomische und militärische Gründe in Alexanders Entscheidung abzeichnen. Alexandreia lag an einem geographisch günstigen Punkt Ägyptens, direkt am Meer. Es sollte wohl nach der Zerstörung von Tyros wenige Monate vor dem Ägypteneinzug 331 v. Chr. das neue Handelszentrum zwischen der griechischen Staatenwelt und der Levante bilden.2 Außerdem erschwerte die besondere Lage der Stadt eine mögliche Invasion von Angreifern. Die Ausbreitung der griechischen Welt in andere Kulturräume, die Vernetzung der griechischen Kultur und die verstärkte Ausbildung von Kontaktzonen zu den besiegten Völkern waren zentrale Charakteristika der hellenistischen Zeit. The volume offers a timely (re-)appraisal of Seleukid cultural dynamics. While the engagement of Seleukid kings with local populations and the issue of “Hellenization” are still debated, a movement away from the Greco-centric approach to the study of the sources has gained pace. Increasingly textual sources are read alongside archaeological and numismatic evidence, and relevant near-eastern records are consulted. Our study of Seleukid kingship adheres to two game-changing principles: 1. We are not interested in judging the Seleukids as “strong” or “weak” whether in their interactions with other Hellenistic kingdoms or with the populations they ruled. 2. While appreciating the value of the social imaginaries approach (Stavrianopoulou, 2013), we argue that the use of ethnic identity in antiquity remains problematic. Through a pluralistic approach, in line with the complex cultural considerations that informed Seleukid royal agendas, we examine the concept of kingship and its gender aspects; tensions between centre and periphery; the level of “acculturation” intended and achieved under the Seleukids; the Seleukid-Ptolemaic interrelations. As rulers of a multi-cultural empire, the Seleukids were deeply aware of cultural politics.
