Excerpt from Advanced Bee-Culture, Its Methods and Management In reply to the query, "What will best mix with bee-keeping?" I have always replied: "Some more bees." When the conditions arc favorable, I am decidedly in favor of bee-keeping: as a specialty - of dropping: all other hampering: pursuits, and turning: the whole capital, time and energies into bee-keeping. If beekeeping-cannot be made profitable as a specialty, then it is unprofitable as a subsidary pursuit. If bee-keeping must be propped up with some other pursuit, then we better throw away bee-keeping, and keep the prop. General farming is very poorly adapted for combining with beekeeping, yet the attempt is probably made oftener than with any other pursuit. There are critical times in bee-keeping that will brook no delay, when three or four days or a week's neglect may mean the loss of a crop; and these times come right in the height of the season, when the farmer is the busiest. Leaving the team and reaper standing idle in the back field while the farmer goes to the house to hive bees, is neither pleasant nor profitable. Drawing in a field of hay, while the bees lie idle because the honey has not been extracted to give them store-room, is another illustration of the conditions with which the farmer-bee-keeper has to contend. The serious part of it is that the honey thus lost may be worth nearly or quite as much as the hay that is saved. Some special lines of rural pursuits, like winter-dairying or the raising of grapes, or winter-apples, unite with bee-keeping to much better advantage than general farming; but when bee-keeping is capable of absorbing all of the capital, time and energy that a man can put into it, why divide these resources with some other pursuit? It has been said that bee-keeping is a precarious pursuit, that it cannot be depended upon, alone, to furnish a livelihood; and, for this reason, it should be joined with some business of a more stable character. Excerpt from Beekeeping: A Discussion of the Life of the Honeybee and of the Production of Honey The present book is the result of an effort to present a logical discussion of the various phases of the complex subject of beekeeping. It was not planned as a book of rules to which one may go for directions for each day's work, for beekeeping cannot be treated correctly in such a way. The activities of bees vary during the seasons and no two localities present to the bees and their owners exactly the same environmental conditions, so that the successful beekeeper is one who has a knowledge of the activities of bees, whereby he can interpret what he sees in the hives from day to day, and who can mold the instincts of the bees to his convenience and profit It has seemed desirable in the early chapters to discuss bees as they exist without man's interference, thus giving the foundation on which the practice of beekeeping rests. The beekeeper is not especially interested in the anatomy of the bee and, while it is necessary to use illustrations of various organs and to describe them briefly, an effort has been made to treat the bee as a living animal and to have the discussion deal with physiology and especially with activities, in so far as investigations have thrown light on these processes. This fascinating book, first published in 1942 under the title The Life of Langstroth, is a graphic and gracefully written biography of the man who invented the modern beehive now used throughout the world. Telling the story of a great and noble life and presenting a clear picture of the history of beekeeping, it is here reissued with an informative new foreword by Roger A. Morse, Professor of Apiculture at Cornell University. Rated among the five or six prime founders of modern theory and practice of bee culture, Langstroth was a clergyman who took up beekeeping as a hobby during a period of poor health. In 1851, in the course of his patient experiments with bees, he discovered a new fact about their behavior, and he used his knowledge to design a hive so perfectly adapted to the bee's uses and to the keeper's needs that it revolutionized beekeeping throughout the world. He then developed a skillful system of apiary management and described it in a sound, practical book that became a classic of bee literature. His name was known throughout the beekeeping fraternity. But Langstroth's life had its darker side. Owing partly to the difficulty of protecting his patent rights, he received little financial reward for his ingenious invention, and throughout his life he was troubled by a mysterious nervous ailment that at times made him hate the sight of a bee. Generous quotations from Langstroth's Journal and other writings give a refreshing immediacy to Miss Naile's narrative. Her book is a fitting tribute to the unusual man who took the mystery out of beekeeping.
