This Formless Thing', published in conjunction with an exhibition of work by Swiss artist Alexandra Navratil at Kunstmuseum Winterthur and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, alludes to the materials and artificial substances from which images are made. Besides enchanting film stills and numerous images appealing to an industrial design aesthetic, the book includes six referential text contributions by Simona Ciuccio, Esther Leslie, Matthew Solomon, Mirjam Varadinis, Jelena Rakin and Natasha Ginwala, which serve to illuminate a series of five thematically complementary works by Navratil. A conversation with the artist by Jennifer Burris completes the volume.

Light And Photomedia written by Jai McKenzie and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-02 with Art categories.

Light and Photomedia proposes that, regardless of technological change, the history and future of photomedia is essentially connected to light. It is a fundamental property of photomedia, binding with space and time to form and inform new, explicitly light-based structures and experiences. Jai McKenzie identifies light-space-time structures throughout the history of photomedia, from the early image machines through analogue and digital image machines to the present day. She proposes that they will continue to develop in the future and takes us to future image machines of the year 2039. With the use of the theories of Paul Virilio, Jean Baudrillard and Vilem Flusser, featuring artists including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Nam June Paik, Yves Klein, Eadweard Muybridge, Martha Rosler, Cindy Sherman and Michael Snow, as well as their photographic images, Light and Photomedia places the reader in a new history and future which, although mostly overlooked by the canon of photomedia theory, is an essential line of enquiry for contemporary thinking and dialogue in photography.

Chromatic Modernity written by Sarah Street and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-02 with Performing Arts categories.

The era of silent film, long seen as black and white, has been revealed in recent scholarship as bursting with color. Yet the 1920s remain thought of as a transitional decade between early cinema and the rise of Technicolor—despite the fact that new color technologies used in film, advertising, fashion, and industry reshaped cinema and consumer culture. In Chromatic Modernity, Sarah Street and Joshua Yumibe provide a revelatory history of how the use of color in film during the 1920s played a key role in creating a chromatically vibrant culture. Focusing on the final decade of silent film, Street and Yumibe portray the 1920s as a pivotal and profoundly chromatic period of cosmopolitan exchange, collaboration, and experimentation in and around cinema. Chromatic Modernity explores contemporary debates over color’s artistic, scientific, philosophical, and educational significance. It examines a wide range of European and American films, including Opus 1 (1921), L’Inhumaine (1923), Die Nibelungen (1924), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), The Lodger (1927), Napoléon (1927), and Dracula (1932). A comprehensive, comparative study that situates film among developments in art, color science, and industry, Chromatic Modernity reveals the role of color cinema in forging new ways of looking at and experiencing the modern world.

M Li S Boots written by Matthew Solomon and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-28 with Performing Arts categories.

Before he became an influential cinematic innovator, Georges Méliès (1861–1938) was a maker of deluxe French footwear, an illusionist, and a caricaturist. Proceeding from these beginnings, Méliès Boots traces how the full trajectory of Georges Méliès’ career during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, along with the larger cultural and historical contexts in which Méliès operated, shaped his cinematic oeuvre. Solomon examines Méliès’ unpublished drawings and published caricatures, the role of laughter in his magic theater productions, and the constituent elements of what Méliès called "the new profession of the cinéaste." The book also reveals Méliès' connections to the Incohérents, a group of ephemeral artists from the 1880s, demonstrating the group’s relevance for Méliès, early cinema, and modernity. By positioning Méliès in relation to the material culture of his time, Solomon demonstrates that Méliès’ work was expressive of a distinctly modern, and modernist, sensibility that appeared in France during the 1880s in the wake of the Second Industrial Revolution.
