Excerpt from Alfalfa and Beef Production in Argentina Land jumps up incredibly in value; thousands Of acres Often change hands several times In a year, with valuations do'ubled at each exchange. This was the case in 1902 with lands in the central part Of the Province Of San Luis, 425 miles by rail west Of the city Of Buenos Aires. It was found that alfalfa would grow very well there, and the lands were wanted by men owning large cattle ranches (pl. II) in the Province Of Buenos Aires, where they could not afford to fatten their steers. They wanted cheap alfalfa lands to which they could send their young steers to fatten and on which they could breed others. Excerpt from Uruguay's Livestock and Meat Industry Total livestock numbers have not changed Significantly in 50 years. While there has been some increase in cattle numbers in the last decade, there has been a corresponding decline in sheep population. Relatively high export taxes and domestic price ceilings have reduced returns from livestock operations and discouraged expansion of the industry. Another factor is that most of the livestock are raised on unimproved native grass pastures, and as a result suffer from nutritional deficiencies. Thus productivity per head of livestock is low and costs of production tend to be high. During most of the past 10 years, Uruguay has had a higher per capita consumption of meat than any other country. About 85 percent of the meat production is consumed domestically, and only 15 percent sold on the export market. Should We Eat Meat written by Vaclav Smil and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-18 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Meat eating is often a contentious subject, whether considering the technical, ethical, environmental, political, or health-related aspects of production and consumption. This book is a wide-ranging and interdisciplinary examination and critique of meat consumption by humans, throughout their evolution and around the world. Setting the scene with a chapter on meat’s role in human evolution and its growing influence during the development of agricultural practices, the book goes on to examine modern production systems, their efficiencies, outputs, and impacts. The major global trends of meat consumption are described in order to find out what part its consumption plays in changing modern diets in countries around the world. The heart of the book addresses the consequences of the "massive carnivory" of western diets, looking at the inefficiencies of production and at the huge impacts on land, water, and the atmosphere. Health impacts are also covered, both positive and negative. In conclusion, the author looks forward at his vision of “rational meat eating”, where environmental and health impacts are reduced, animals are treated more humanely, and alternative sources of protein make a higher contribution. Should We Eat Meat? is not an ideological tract for or against carnivorousness but rather a careful evaluation of meat's roles in human diets and the environmental and health consequences of its production and consumption. It will be of interest to a wide readership including professionals and academics in food and agricultural production, human health and nutrition, environmental science, and regulatory and policy making bodies around the world.
