First publication of a new collection of the Booker Prize-winner's stories including those from her most recent hardback 'Taking Pictures'. In Yesterday's Weather, Booker Prize-winning author Anne Enright presents a series of deeply moving stories about women stirred, bothered, or fascinated by men they cannot understand, or understand too well. Enright's characters are haunted by the ghosts of the lives they might have led - lit by new flames, old flames, and flames that are guttering out. A woman's one night stand is illuminated by dreams of a young boy on a cliff road, another's is thwarted by an swarm of somnolent bees. A pregnant woman is stuck in a slow lift with a tactile American stranger, a naked mother changes a nappy in a hotel bedroom, and waits for her husband to come back from the bar. This collection includes some of Enright's best loved stories as well as her latest works. These are sharp, vivid tales of loss and yearning, of surrender to responsibilities or to unexpected delight; all share the unsettling, dislocated reality, the subversive wit and awkward tenderness that have marked Anne Enright as one of our most thrillingly gifted writers.

The bestselling author of Seven Seas, Nine Lives continues the remarkable experiences of Captain A.W.F. “Alfie” Sutton during the Second World War. Written in three parts, this book follows the harrowing adventures of Captain A.W.F. “Alfie” Sutton, CBE, DSC and bar, RN. During events which come as close to fiction as is imaginable, the first part describes how Alfie, badly injured and close to death during the bombing of HMS Illustrious by the Luftwaffe in January 1941, wakes to find himself laid out among the dead, but miraculously still able to help the ship on to Malta. After full recovery, part two starts with his involvement in the Allied campaign in Greece in the spring of 1941, leading to him eventually evacuating the Greek royal family in a flying boat. After numerous escapades he fights with the defenders during the German invasion of Crete in 1941. Admiral Cunningham was later to describe Sutton’s efforts as “an example of grand personal courage under the worst possible conditions which stands out brightly in the gloom.” It was a struggle doomed to failure, but Alfie survived to continue his war and tell his story to author Richard Pike who relates it here with passion, pace and drama.

He thinks it is a good idea to have the university education in another city in order to get away from his family because he wakes up to a morning of hatred everyday at home. He begins a new education life at the branch of physics and chemistry in California University due to his love of science. His years at university pass in poverty and he only has one friend, and also a British old friend whom he remembers sometimes and misses so much. He applies for jobs to some science institutions for earning his life at his university years but when he gets refused, he comes across a hot dog seller coincidentally and starts to work for him. Besides all, his biggest mistake is to mess with an illegal gumbling gang. Later, he falls in love with his new neighbour Valerie, whom he has seen for the first time in the garden in his life. Valerie is his first love in the life. He notices that his poor mother Sarah is still a worker at a textile factory, his brother has achieved nothing in his life yet and his quarrelsome father Micheal is still a drunk during the time he is home. He thinks he is right again and starts to develop intimacy with his love. This becomes possible due to Valerie's artist personality and Alfie's fondness to art. After a time, Alfie learns the truth from a colonel at the military service. He is told that his father was an old agent and his brother died in Turkey for special-ops. The colonel tells him that his family is in trouble with the Turks. Alfie turns to be a murderer in the chain of events for the sake of protecting the people who he loves both from the Turks and the gambling gang and he murders other people. Then, he begins to feel pleasure of that. He lastly murders his father and finally gets arrested owing to Valerie's betrayal after witnessing the murder.
