Alfonso R. Castelao (1886-1950) gehört zu den wichtigsten Repräsentanten der neueren galicischen Literatur und ist zugleich Symbolfigur einer demokratischen, nationalistisch orientierten Bewegung für die Unabhängigkeit Galiciens. Die literatur-soziologische Arbeit untersucht die politischen und sozialen Vorstellungen des Autors und deren ästhetische Umsetzung im erzählerischen Werk. Ausgangspunkt ist die Interdependenz von Literatur und Politik, die als Formen der Auseinandersetzung mit der prekären galicischen Realität begriffen werden.
