Vor zehn Jahren erschien das erste Jahrbuch der Alfred-Delp-Gesellschaft. Das diesjährige sollte ein Jubiläumsband werden. Tatsächlich ist es ein Buch der Trauer um den im November 2016 verstorbenen "geistigen Vater" der Alfred-Delp-Gesellschaft, Günther Saltin, und seiner ebenfalls verstorbenen Ehefrau, Ursula Saltin, geworden. Unter dem Untertitel "Zeugnis christlichen Glaubens in der Zeit" werden die Leistungen des Ehepaares für die Alfred-Delp-Gedenkkultur gewürdigt, nicht ohne das vom christlichen Glauben motivierte Zeugnis des Jesuitenpaters Delp in Form der für das Jahrbuch charakteristischen wissenschaftlichen Beiträge aus den Augen zu verlieren.

Im Jahr 1941 prägte Alfred Delp in Fulda vor für Männerseelsorge Verantwortlichen das Wort von "Deutschland als Missionsland", ein Befund, dem nicht mehr beizukommen sei durch Intensivierung der überkommenen Seelsorgsmethoden; dieser Zustand wurzele in der "Gottesunfähigkeit" des modernen Menschen, die in Wechselbeziehung stehe mit der "Verkümmerung" jener Organe, die empfänglich machen für Gott und sein Wort. Diese Befindlichkeit ist in Delps Deutung mit verantwortlich für die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Zustände, die die damalige Situation in Deutschland ausmachen. Der 1. Katholikentag nach dem Krieg 1948 in Mainz griff zwar Delps Stichwort auf, folgte aber seiner Analyse und seinen Therapievorschlägen nicht. Die heutige Situation drängt dazu, auch in ökumenischer Hinsicht neu zu fragen nach den Erkenntnissen Delps und seiner Gefährten.

Although the Breslau arts scene was one of the most vibrant in all of Weimar-era Germany, it has largely disappeared from memory. Studies of the influence of Weimar culture on modernism have focused almost exclusively on Berlin and the Dessau Bauhaus, yet the advances that occurred in Breslau affected nearly every intellectual field, forming the basis for aesthetic modernism internationally and having an enduring impact on visual art and architecture. Breslau boasted a thriving modern arts scene and one of the premier German arts academies of the day until the Nazis began their assault on so-called degenerate art. This book charts the cultural production of Breslau-based artists, architects, art collectors, urban designers, and arts educators who operated in the margins of Weimar-era cultural debates. Rather than accepting the radical position of the German avant-garde or the reactionary position of German conservatives, many Breslauers sought a middle ground. This richly illustrated volume is the first book in English to address this history, constituting an invaluable addition to the literature on the Weimar period.
