Algebraic geometry occupied a central place in the mathematics of the last century. The deepest results of Abel, Riemann, Weierstrass, many of the most important papers of Klein and Poincare belong to this do mam. At the end of the last and the beginning of the present century the attitude towards algebraic geometry changed abruptly. Around 1910 Klein wrote: "When I was a student, Abelian functions*-as an after-effect of Jacobi's tradition-were regarded as the undIsputed summit of mathe matics, and each of us, as a matter of course, had the ambition to forge ahead in this field. And now? The young generation hardly know what Abelian functions are." (Vorlesungen tiber die Entwicklung der Mathe matik im XIX. Jahrhundert, Springer-Verlag, Berlin 1926, Seite 312). The style of thinking that was fully developed in algebraic geometry at that time was too far removed from the set-theoretical and axio matic spirit, which then determined the development of mathematics. Several decades had to lapse before the rise of the theory of topolo gical, differentiable and complex manifolds, the general theory of fields, the theory of ideals in sufficiently general rings, and only then it became possible to construct algebraic geometry on the basis of the principles of set-theoretical mathematics. Around the middle of the present century algebraic geometry had undergone to a large extent such a reshaping process. As a result, it can again lay claim to the position it once occupied in mathematics

This book commemorates the 150th birthday of Corrado Segre, one of the founders of the Italian School of Algebraic Geometry and a crucial figure in the history of Algebraic Geometry. It is the outcome of a conference held in Turin, Italy. Algebraic geometry has always been an ec1ectic science, with its roots in algebra, function-theory and topology. Apart from early resear ches, now about a century old, this beautiful branch of mathematics has for many years been investigated chiefly by the Italian school which, by its pioneer work, based on algebro-geometric methods, has succeeded in building up an imposing body of knowledge. Quite apart from its intrinsic interest, this possesses high heuristic value since it represents an essential step towards the modern achievements. A certain lack of rigour in the c1assical methods, especially with regard to the foundations, is largely justified by the creative impulse revealed in the first stages of our subject; the same phenomenon can be observed, to a greater or less extent, in the historical development of any other science, mathematical or non-mathematical. In any case, within the c1assical domain itself, the foundations were later explored and consolidated, principally by SEVERI, on lines which have frequently inspired further investigations in the abstract field. About twenty-five years ago B. L. VAN DER WAERDEN and, later, O. ZARISKI and A. WEIL, together with their schools, established the methods of modern abstract algebraic geometry which, rejecting the c1assical restriction to the complex groundfield, gave up geometrical intuition and undertook arithmetisation under the growing influence of abstract algebra.

Algebraic geometry and geometric modeling both deal with curves and surfaces generated by polynomial equations. Algebraic geometry investigates the theoretical properties of polynomial curves and surfaces; geometric modeling uses polynomial, piecewise polynomial, and rational curves and surfaces to build computer models of mechanical components and assemblies for industrial design and manufacture. The NSF sponsored the four-day ''Vilnius Workshop on Algebraic Geometry and Geometric Modeling'', which brought together some of the top experts in the two research communities to examine a wide range of topics of interest to both fields. This volume is an outgrowth of that workshop. Included are surveys, tutorials, and research papers. In addition, the editors have included a translation of Minding's 1841 paper, ''On the determination of the degree of an equations obtained by elimination'', which foreshadows the modern application of mixed volumes in algebraic geometry.
