La presente obra da a conocer las más importantes relaciones de confluencia y complementariedad entre la psicología y el psicoanálisis. Examina, en primer lugar, los antecedentes filosóficos de la psicología (ascéticos y epistémicos), algunas de sus discusiones epistemológicas, sus relaciones con la ciencia clásica y contemporánea y sus derivaciones en corrientes y escuelas en la actualidad. En segundo lugar, expone qué es el psicoanálisis a partir de tres categorías complementarias: como método de investigación, como ciencia crítico-emancipatoria y como experiencia de escesis subjetiva; muestra algunas de sus articulaciones más relevantes con la filosofía, la ciencia y, especialmente, con la psicología como ciencia y como saber científico (no necesariamente ciencia). En tercer lugar, presenta los puntos de confluencia y divergencia en una práctica concreta en la que tanto psicología como psicoanálisis han incursionado: la psicoterapia, mostrando dos modalidades de intervención: sintomal y ascética, y agrupando las diferentes propuestas psicoterapéuticas en tres categorias: 1) psicoterapia y conocimiento psicológico, 2) psicoterapia y relación terapéutica y 3) psicoterapia y transmisión del método analítico. En cuarto lugar, finalmente, propone una orientación psicoanalítica en la psicología, mostrando algunas de sus aplicaciones en investigación y en distintos ámbitos de la realidad (social, educativo y trabajo con grupos).
