Se trata de una recopilación de cuentos cortos desarrollados tomando siempre como origen algunos importantes sucesos históricos en los que el autor ha introducido variantes e interpretaciones en los hechos acaecidos diferentes a como nos han llegado en nuestros días. Todas los relatos están escritos con un agudo sentido del humor, no exento de ciertas críticas a costumbres, creencias y formas de vida de nuestras sociedades de ahora y de siempre, que hacen no solo muy amena su lectura, sino que en muchos casos nos lleva a reflexionar de si en realidad, la historia fue diferente a como la conocemos. Los cuentos de la primera parte se refieren a hechos sucedidos realmente, o al menos así lo creemos, tratando sobre personajes tan dispares entre ellos, como la reina Nefertiti, el patriarca Noé, Cristóbal Colón, Cervantes, Santa Claus o Luis Candelas entre otros. En la segunda, por el contrario, los personajes de las historias no han existido, o si lo han hecho, no son conocidos, ni reconocidos por nadie, pero en la mayoría de los casos hubieran tenido, a juicio del autor, derecho a pasar a la posterioridad.

Narrator Francis Wayland Thurston, recounts his discovery of the strange notes left behind by his granduncle, George Gammell Angell, a prominent Professor of Semitic languages at Brown University. At first the story revolves around a small bas-relief sculpture found among the papers, which the narrator describes: "My somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature.... A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings". Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction.
