A hilarious, mind-bending investigation into how much humans and aliens might have in common, scientifically speaking—from a best-selling cartoonist and acclaimed physicist. When the long-awaited day dawns and the aliens finally arrive on Earth, they might eat us and destroy the planet—or, just maybe, they might share the secrets of the Universe with us. When that time comes, will we be able to cross the communication barrier to beg for our lives? If the aliens do hold out those precious jewels of knowledge, will we even be able to grasp them? It’s long been assumed, in both science fiction and real scientific efforts to communicate with hypothetical aliens, that math and physics could serve as a universal language connecting us with extraterrestrial minds. But as humanity draws ever closer to the possibility of an interplanetary future and expands its agelong search for alien life and intelligence, beloved author and physicist Daniel Whiteson and best-selling cartoonist Andy Warner wonder if we should be so sure. In Do Aliens Speak Physics?, they take readers on a wild adventure to the edges of space-time, science, and the imagination to investigate whether an alien–human mind meld could ever be achieved. Deploying cutting-edge physics, deep philosophical insight, and plenty of cartoons, Whiteson and Warner explode what we thought we knew about talking to our cosmic neighbors—and even science itself—by asking and answering questions both lighthearted and profound. Would aliens even need science to build the technology that brings them to Earth? Is it possible that they could experience the Universe very differently from us—tasting electrons and smelling photons? Would the extraterrestrials have to perceive “electrons” and “photons” at all, or are these particles only convenient concepts for our human minds? At bottom, does physics reveal fundamental truths about the Universe, as we so often believe, or might it in fact tell us more about ourselves? As ultimately mind-altering as it is hilarious, Do Aliens Speak Physics? will leave you with a view of the Universe—and humanity—that’s stranger and more marvelous than before.

Nordic Nature Trends Towards 2010 written by Marja Pylvänäinen and has been published by Nordic Council of Ministers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Biodiversity categories.

The international target to slow and even halt the decline in biodiversity by the end of 2010 has been included in the Nordic Council of Ministers' Environmental Action Plan for 2009-2012. We already know that this goal will not be reached, in spite of the many actions big and small taken around the Nordic Region to help preserve and protect biodiversity. During the UN International Year of Biodiversity 2010 new goals will be defined and campaigns will be conducted to emphasise the importance of biodiversity to nature and people. The task of conserving biodiversity will also continue after the theme year 2010. The project Nordic nature - trends towards 2010 has presented examples illustrating the threats facing biodiversity together with conservation success stories, and also descriptions of conservation efforts that have not always produced the desired results. These reviews have been published as fact sheets in electronic format on the project's websites in all of the Nordic languages and in English. This publication compiles these published fact sheets, together with a summary of current trends in biodiversity in the Nordic Countries, as part of our region's contribution towards the 2010 biodiversity target and the goal of increasing awareness of the special significance of biodiversity.

The impact of invasive species is second only to that of human population growth and associated activities as a cause of the loss of biodiversity throughout the world. In the United States, invasions of nonnative plants, animals, or microbes cause major environmental damage. The second edition of Biological Invasions: Economic and Environmental Costs of Alien Plant, Animal, and Microbe Species represents the most current, single-source reference containing scientific and economic information on this timely subject. This volume reconfirms the diverse and unpredictable roles that non-native species assume as they invade new ecosystems: destruction of vital crops and forests, major damages to ecosystems leading to loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and water loss. The text provides information on how the non-native species invade new ecosystems, their subsequent environmental effects, and estimates on economic impacts. Biological Invasions supplies scientists, policymakers, and the public with a better understanding of the invading species and how to prevent their spread and improve control procedures.

Conventional And Contemporary Practices Of Plant Breeding written by Patrick O. Ayiecho and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-01-23 with Science categories.

This book covers some established conventional and recent advances in plant breeding methods. It highlights and treats in detail some breeding strategies not adequately handled or usually ignored in many plant breeding texts. There is in-depth coverage of plant resistance mechanisms to various stress factors and application of phenotyping, genotyping, bioinformatics, molecular markers, ‘omics’ technologies, biotechnology, transgenesis and gene editing in crop improvement. Topics like germplasm conservation, plant sex expression and pollination control, recurrent selection methods, interspecific hybridisation, pre-breeding, chromosome manipulation and breeding for resistance to diseases and insect pests are comprehensively covered. The book gives special attention to some problems that affect food security in developing countries, e.g., parasitic weeds and drought and heat stress. Breeding for resistance to parasitic weeds like Striga, broomrapes and Cascuta is always ignored in most plant breeding texts. Where applicable, problems and challenges associated with some breeding strategies are highlighted and possible solutions proposed. The text is rich in relevant examples for various topics. The book is suitable for teaching of plant breeding at the university level and is also beneficial to practising plant breeders. It brings together some relevant work and literary information that is useful to university lecturers, students and practising plant breeders. The book targets university students in agricultural and plant sciences, particularly those taking plant breeding as a key unit/course.
