Aljubarrota was one of the great pitched battles of the Middle Ages between two royal armies and one of the most decisive events in the history of Portugal. In the diplomatic field, it allowed the alliance between Portugal and England, which continues to this day. Politically, it resolved the Portuguese dispute against the Kingdom of Castile and Leon, allowing Portugal to be declared an independent kingdom, paving the way under the Avis dynasty for one of the most remarkable eras in its history, the Age of Discovery. Analyzing the battle of Aljubarrota we observed that the Castilians should have sought to guard against the tactical surprises of the Portuguese device. They should have forced the noble gentlemen (mainly French) to put aside the pride of their cavalry charges. They should not have left the bulk of their infantry behind - on the contrary, it should have been the top echelon from the start - and when this weapon was employed it should not have been concentrated in the center, not only after some initial success, but throughout the whole battle. And in this case, the penetration “shoulders” - right and left wings - should have been reinforced. Finally, in the technique they should have sought a better job - adapted to the terrain and enemy situation - for their important force of crossbowmen, particularly in counterbattery the Portuguese fire.

War in the Iberian Peninsula, 700–1600 is a panoramic synthesis of the Iberian Peninsula including the kingdoms of Leon and Castile, Aragon, Portugal, Navarra, al-Andalus and Granada. It offers an extensive chronology, covering the entire medieval period and extending through to the sixteenth century, allowing for a very broad perspective of Iberian history which displays the fixed and variable aspects of war over time. The book is divided kingdom by kingdom to provide students and academics with a better understanding of the military interconnections across medieval and early modern Iberia. The continuities and transformations within Iberian military history are showcased in the majority of chapters through markers to different periods and phases, particularly between the Early and High Middle Ages, and the Late Middle Ages. With a global outlook, coverage of all the most representative military campaigns, sieges and battles between 700 and 1600, and a wide selection of maps and images, War in the Iberian Peninsula is ideal for students and academics of military and Iberian history.

A lively and fascinating narrative history about the birth of the modern world. Beginning in the heady days just after the First Crusade, this volume—the third in the series that began with The History of the Ancient World and The History of the Medieval World—chronicles the contradictions of a world in transition. Popes continue to preach crusade, but the hope of a Christian empire comes to a bloody end at the walls of Constantinople. Aristotelian logic and Greek rationality blossom while the Inquisition gathers strength. As kings and emperors continue to insist on their divine rights, ordinary people all over the world seize power: the lingayats of India, the Jacquerie of France, the Red Turbans of China, and the peasants of England. New threats appear, as the Ottomans emerge from a tiny Turkish village and the Mongols ride out of the East to set the world on fire. New currencies are forged, new weapons invented, and world-changing catastrophes alter the landscape: the Little Ice Age and the Great Famine kill millions; the Black Death, millions more. In the chaos of these epoch-making events, our own world begins to take shape. Impressively researched and brilliantly told, The History of the Renaissance World offers not just the names, dates, and facts but the memorable characters who illuminate the years between 1100 and 1453—years that marked a sea change in mankind’s perception of the world.
