Excerpt from Information About Alaska Continued rains in the coast region frequently interfere with farm work. On the other hand, extreme cold weather of the winter in the in teribr, where the temperature.sometimes falls to - 65° F or lower, makes life out of doors, both for man and beast, uncomfortable, but these periods of extreme cold are of brief duration. They do not affect farm work to any noticeable extent, because there is little outdoor farm work to be done at that time of the year. The summers are sometimes uncomfortably warm in the interior - the temperature at Rampart has occasionally reached 960 F., but these hot spells are also of short duration. Excerpt from Alaska, an Empire in the Making The information contained in this book was gathered during an almost continuous residence of fourteen years in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Much of this time, it is true, was spent in fishing, hunting, exploring, mining, and various ways other than the acquisition of data. But what has been written is as accurate as it is humanly possible to make it. The writer's notes and observations have been checked up with government reports and other official documents, and the works of Alfred H. Brooks, Chief of the Geological Survey in Alaska, Skidmore's "History of Sitka," Dall's "Resources of Alaska," Senator Sumner's speech on the resources of Alaska, and various documents in the state, treasury and other departments of the government have been freely consulted. It is hoped that it will serve not only as a guide for tourists and sightseers who visit the Northern wonderland, but also that it may contain matters of interest to the stock raiser, the farmer, the miner, the prospector, the investor, and those who may go to Alaska for purposes other than sight-seeing. A few of the photographs herein reproduced were taken by the writer, but the majority of them represent the work of several professional photographers situated in different parts of the Northland. Excerpt from Alaska Its History, Climate Natural Resources The brief history of the discovery and occupa tion of Alaska byxthe Russians, which I have inr corporate'd in this work, has been compiled largely from the records of the russian-ameri can Company, as translated for me by Mr.' George Kostrometinoff. That part relating to the purchase of the country by the United States are matters of Congressional record, which the reader can easily verify by referring to the de bates had in the Senate and House of Represent atives, 1867 8. The remainder, and by far the larger part of the volume, is based upon personal observation and research, made during an official residence of severalyears in the Territory, during which time I personally visited all the different sections referred to for the special purpose of in vestigation and report. Concerning my estimate of the natural resources of these different sec tions, I am wholly content to await the confirma tion that certainly lies withinthe near future. F. Excerpt from Alaska and the Klondike When the special subcommittee of the Senate Com mittee on Territories visited Alaska in the summer of 1903 for the purpose of gathering information which would enable them to legislate wisely and helpfully with regard to that great district, I was fortunate enough to obtain permission to accompany the senatorial party in an unofficial capacity. The trip occupied, approximately, ten weeks, and carried us not only through the interior, along the whole course of the Yukon River, but to many places on the coast and among the islands not readily accessible by the regular means of travel. As will be readily under stood, enjoyed peculiarly favourable opportunities to study the resources and the possibilities of the country, and the following pages on Alaska, in their original form, were written for my paper after my return home, and published in it exclusively. There appears to be a demand for reliable and up-to-date information about that coun try - that, and the urgent request of men who have read what I have written, and who know Alaska, that it be given permanent and convenient form, are the excuses for this volume. For this purpose the original story of Alaska has been carefully revised and the statistical information brought down to include the commercial and industrial operations of the year 1904. Excerpt from Frozen Justice: A Story of Alaska Along the low, sandy foreshore, on a stretch of four or five miles, stands hut after hut, built of wood, made snug with turf; and outside each hut is a platform, raised high above the ground. On this all the household goods are stored meat, blubber, skin-bladders full of oil, hides tanned and raw, clothes old and new, dog-har ness, kayaks, sledges, spears, lances, weapons and tools of all sorts - everything an Eskimo has use for is here, lashed together with stout sealskin thongs, safe from the furious winter storms, from being buried under the snow, but above all from the evil designs of the dogs. Excerpt from Alaska: Its Waters, Land and Life For as far as do the colors and fretwork of a California sunset lie beyond the powers of detailed reproduction by the artist, so do the scenic marvels of these isles and channels surpass the limit of descriptive narrative. From the time that you enter Clarence Strait until you move through Cross Sound again into the North Pacific, you are encompassed by aswiftly changing panorama of surprises. Your first sensations will be that you have strangely stepped off the ocean and are making a journey through inland waters that are not related to the sea. For the fresh scent in the cold, damp air is not the odor of brine, and this commingling with the agreeable exhalations of the forests which clothe the mountains upon your either hand, makes you feel that you are winding amongst a a mesh of rivers in some semi-frigid interior.
