A fresh picture book of simple but surprising exploration of the art, science, and emotion of color. This mindful meditation encourages children to see the world differently. Colors don’t exist. The sky is not blue. The grass is not green. A violet is not even violet. But color still plays an important role in our lives. Color can be a signal, as in a traffic light. It can be a call for help, like a life jacket. It can help us stand out or blend in, or feel like part of a team. Colors even affect our mood: red can make us angry, blue can make us sad, and yellow can brighten our day. Young readers will never look at color the same way again.

A fascinating and idiosyncratic journey through colour — its history, its meaning, and its effect on everyday life. Janice Lindsay, an experienced colour designer with a background in art history and design, has always been passionate and curious about colour. In this book she shares a lifetime of discoveries about why colour, something we think will be simple to use and understand, is so complex. She takes us on a journey that combines history, biology, and interior design with personal insights from years of helping others choose colour and get it right. Along the way she recounts how a yellow was once made from cow’s urine and can be used as an intellectual stimulant. How blue used to be considered light black before it gained popularity and became more expensive than gold. And how vermilion red used to look better the longer it was ground — twenty years was just about long enough. Lindsay explains how the invisible colour in daylight is as essential to our bodies as air and water. Colour is not just decoration, it has the power to change how we feel and function. She tells stories of colour-blind clients, of clients who thought they were happy living without colour until they found out what they were missing, and students whose marks improved once colour was added to the halls. Lindsay explains how we have a colour wisdom that is millions of years in the making based on nature encoded into our DNA and that we need to draw on that wisdom to humanize our built environments. Colour can make a house a home. This book is about you. You and colour are linked in ways that we haven’t imagined. Beware: after reading this book you will never look at colour the same way again.

"Here is a new book jam-packed with information on color and pigments and painting by the author of Watercolor Right from the Start. Designed to overlap her earlier book as well as to advance into territory of great interest to artists - the subject of color - Color Right from the Start adopts the design, the how-to format, and the progression of lessons that have already proven popular with Page's readers. Thus it provides a familiar foundation for lessons on the color spectrum, why colors produce certain optical effects, what paints are made of, why they behave as they do when they're wet, when they're dry - and much more, all lavishly illustrated." "If you want to construct your own color charts - color wheels for light and for pigments, and color-mixing "maps" - Hilary Page shows you how. If you want to test your pigments for their special properties - how the pigment particles settle on paper, how well the paint serves as a glaze or in wet-on-wet application - she tells you exactly how to proceed." "In subsequent lessons, she focuses on each major hue, from gray to yellow and on through red and blue to green - primary colors, secondary colors, and neutrals. These lessons reinforce all the concepts the author has explained earlier, as she demonstrates the uses of color in specific paintings. Most of these demonstrations develop in a step-by-step, easy-to-follow manner. You will not only understand the evolution of a picture's color scheme, but also follow the mixing and application of the paints themselves. Watercolor techniques are demonstrated to show off the pigments and to achieve desired color effects. It's one thing to read what simultaneous contrast is, it's another to make it work for you in a watercolor that you paint with the pigments you actually own." "Color Right from the Start carefully explains some sophisticated concepts and is written to give artists just the depth of knowledge they need to be well-informed. Beginners will want this book so that they can attain a basic, hands-on knowledge of color. This makes the book useful also as a reference tool for the more advanced artist. Providing all the practice that a beginner needs to fully grasp the magic of color in his or her own work, Color Right from the Start also serves as a lively refresher-course as well."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. There have been many qualities obtained over the years, including work and positions of leadership in several nonprofit organizations. Also a deep interest in color and design, ranging from the ownership in two art shops that bridged the gap between art gallery and a craft shop, with quality and variety. This led to set design for a local theater and interior design that I love. However, the greatest achievement, besides raising four children, was my participation in the Harmonic Convergence. This took place in 1987, and the best place to be was the only sacred site east of the Mississippi at the Serpent Mounds in Ohio. Since I needed an active part, I was The Hug Lady and met people from all over the world. Whatever we did, it helped, because the Berlin Wall came down within three years, and it was the beginning of the end of Communism. I enjoy anything I can do to help others.
